Bottom Bracket question...

  • I've tried searching but can't find my answer so forgive me if this is tired ground...I'm new to Fixed/Singlespeed from MTB and collecting the bits for my first build after my nice OTP was stolen back in June....

Anyway, after deliberating for ages over chainset choice, I went on eBay whilst drunk(twat) and pressed the button on a Campag Record Pista crankset...Now I'm unsure of vintage but its the one with the fluted arms and winged logo etched/engraved on there too. It'll be running alongside a Phil Wood flip flop rear hub....so what length spindle am I after if the frame is 68mm BB shell?

Remember I'm new to all this so don't be too harsh! I know the old Campy's crack and fail but it look's pretty in all likelihood this build wont be a daily mile muncher. More of a present to myself after a) deciding I couldn't quite swing for Dura-Ace b) not liking the look of the new/current Campy Pista cranks...

  • google "sheldon brown" and utfs ("transmission").
the best advice i can give you would be to put all the nice components aside and build a beater out of 2nd hand components you buy on here. youre much more likley to build up a fugly or mismatched bike first time round and may come to regret using nice components.
plus, youll learn a lot more from mistakes and things that dont fit/ strip threads than from anything else; let the learning process be less costly.

if you still want to go ahead...
you want a straight chainline, so the read hub width and spindle length need to be considered. transmission database and google - and actually a ruler as you have the parts - will tell you what you need.
