If anyone is interested in building their own wheels but doesn't want to fork out money to buy tools or invest in training then you're very welcome to come and use the tools at my place. I have Park TS-7 truing stands, Park TS-1 spoke tensiometer, spoke nipple drivers and various spoke keys along with a dishing tool.
I'm in Sydenham, SE London. I have a room dedicated to building wheels where I build wheels to order and also run classes. These open sessions are by appointment only and aren't run on a regular basis. I won't be offering you any guidance (bribes accepted) but you're welcome to use the tools and work on your own wheels while I work on client orders.
Give me a shout if you're interested and I'll schedule my next session so that I save up my client builds.
arup is a dude, such a sound guy.
he's built a number of wheelsets for me, one track hubs on deep rims which i went bikepacking on, that have stood the test of thousands of kms under stress. all still true.
with my last build, he offered free use of his space and tools to build wheels. i took him up on the offer and built 1 of the few i wanted done.
unloaded snacks, loaded youtube, headphones in and watched his tutorials whilst building.
it's not a class so don't expect to be taught, and appreciate arup is effectively in his office working. that said, there was opportunity to ask considered questions, which arup happily answered... i think the nice tea i brought for us played it's part there.
tldr: teach yourself how to build wheels at arup's.
Does this offer still stand? I was just thinking this could be exactly what I need to get up the nerve to start building my own wheels (at least from time to time!).
Yep, still available. Send me a PM, a text, a tweet, a whatapp message or whatever works best for you to arrange a time. You could even call and speak!
Don't worry about formatting, just type in the text and we'll take care of making sense of it. We will auto-convert links, and if you put asterisks around words we will make them bold.
