Seat stay bent and dented

Posted on
  • Just picked up a Reynolds 653 frame on ebay and found that it has a bent seat stay with a small dent. The dent isn't visible but can be felt easily by hand.

Have no way to upload pictures but with the wonder of paint I think I can give you an idea.

Is it fatal? Or even fixable!?

  • Since steel, it wont explode in a nanosecond, and if it breaks, it is replaceable. Ride it and check if the dent turns into a crater later.

  • I had a frame with a similar dent and it just got worse and worse until I sold the frame for peanuts. I had considered welding a sleeve over it, but for a fancy thin-tubed frame like yours, I would think replacement of the stay is the only option. If the damage wasn't listed, I would send it back.

  • a dent shouldnt be a problem. the bend would effect the tracking as the rear wheel could be out of allignment. its relatively easy to fix a bent seatstay, I think theres instructions on sheldons site.

  • I'm riding a similarly damaged 531c frame, I'm 104kg, and it's ok. Hopefully yours will be too.
