earlier wider shaped Look with the screw adjuster in the back plate or early double/ single sided SPD's.
Time : long and narrow pedals were around then too I think.....
Your choice may be decided on how much walking you do- as that would lean towards the SPD's where you could wear MTB shoes- but not with single sided SPD's as the side ridges on them foul the MTB treaded soles.

Have Look pedals with Delta cleats that are period correct. Various colours so PM with more details/info then can send images if my pal HillyBen can't satisfy you

Very interesting, thank you for the advice. Whilst I've kept everything else period on the bike, I'm now beginning to think that pedals might be an exception - purely down to comfort and practicality.
What are the best modern systems out there?

+1 for the above, cheap and give a nice wide platform.
Cheapest with cleats are still Merlin @ £36 including extra 5% discount!

SPD-SL are easy to clip in and out of plus the you can 'walk' in the cleats without too many problems.....if you get Look Delta pedals the cleats need rubber covers to enable you to walk on them.....ok for a coffee/tea stop.

Hi,
I'm looking for some advice on what pedals would work well and look right on a vitus 979.
I am currently using shimano 600s with cages, but I'm now looking into getting clip in pedals and shoes for longer rides. Does anyone have any advice on what I should be looking for (80s era)?
If so please send me a PM
Thanks,
Rob
