how much is the kit? If it were me I'd be more inclined to replace it properly and respray the forks myself. Gloss black will be easy to replicate.

the kit (actually just a long bolt, spacer tube and washer) costs about £6.

I'd still be constantly aware of it. It would be less of a concern on the rear (completely unfounded stevo_com logic).
But then, that's just the opinion of someone on the internets.

braze on bits like brake studs are usually the cheapest thing that frame builders do. Ask around.

Get it done properly and live with the disturbances to the paint job. Bit of rattlecan will have it looking like newish in no time.

They unscrew, go to LBS and ask if they have a spare you could have.
Take cake.

They dont all unscrew. The unscrewable ones are more of a recent feature, for when MTB's went disc and BMX's went brakless.

The ones pictured do.

It has a Hex inside.

^excellent! I've wondered that for a few years now. Kinda obvious once you said it. Cheers.

Well the alarm bells were gently ringing when I collected my ebay purchase and the 'buckled' front wheel turned out to be utterly trashed, apparently by some significant impact. Still, the frame and forks seemed straight enough, and the price was definitely right.
Sure enough though, a little more crash damage was soon revealed once I got it home and stripped:
I can get the braze-on boss replaced for about £25 quid, but the paint will be ruined. And time is pressing, so I'm contemplating giving this 'repair kit' a try.

The idea is that the longer brake bolt fastens into whatever thread remains after cutting off the narrow stud section. I do have access to the proper tap to maximise this length - will end up about 6 or 7mm I reckon. Anyone have any thoughts or experience of this bodge? The makers specify 'not for heavy use eg trials'. Not sure if my intended commute-plus-occaisional-light-tour usage will be too strenuous - what do you reckon?
