  • Would have considered that if I hadn't just fitted a new 6700 crankset, chain, cassette and bottom bracket...

    Hindsight eh

  • Why not the rear derailler too? Groupset discount!

  • Buy Campagnolo, fully serviceable and spare parts are readily available at the same cost of a new 105 derailler.

    Yucky parts.

  • I have had to bin two Shimano 105 rear mechs, I've never, ever binned a Campag one.

  • Not *surprised *that it's finally died, just frustrated that it's apparently not fixable. I thought Shimano might have been above selling/designing parts that require full replacement where a simple spring would suffice.

Shimano are notorious for not having spare parts.

There is a firm based in the the UK who recondition these things - I'll have a root through some email and come back in a bit.

Don't need the shifters, that's all. Good thing too seeing that they're far far too much.

Leaving out the shifters I'm essentially left with a new 6700 groupset for sub-£330. Sigma are fitting/re-indexing a new rear mech and cable as I type ;)

  • So have you upgraded to ultegra rear mech now?

  • Yup, was going to anyway but in a couple of weeks. Would have like to have done it in my own time but this failure meant I had little choice.
Could have gone for a ~£20 2nd hand 105 (not likely) or a new one for £35ish but I think the extra 20 is worth it for relative peace of mind.

And of course now it's all 6700 now apart from the front mech

  • The serviceability of rear mechs is kind off interesting hadn't thought about it before. It seems Campag have a one up on Shimano, anyone care to comment about SRAM in this area?

Just interested since I'm looking at groupsets for a tourer at the moment. Purely a SRAM vs Shimano thing.

Most important thing to come out of this thread is your outing yourself as being responsible for giving this to the world.

There isn't enough neg to splash out.

  • Blame Tibbs and his AK ;)

  • For smug Campag owners, the cage is often attached with a circlip which holds the cage onto the back of the mech.

Not sure if you can see this on your own mech; remove the wheels from the cage and you should be able to see.
