Good idea! i may just do that.
thinking just for the tops by the stem.
Having attempted my first harlequin wrap, the results of which certainly aren't worthy of this thread, the idea of wrapping them over gel pads gives me the heebie-jeebies. Good luck in what will be fiendishly difficult...

I think he meant he'll try slipping an old inner tube on, rather than gel pads, which should be easier (if not as cushy) as gel pads.
-
• #704
yeah id only use gel pads if i wrap them normally, just on the top to as i probably wont need them in the drops

Forgot to say, talc inside the tube helps them slide on: twist side to side as you push.
I've never had any trouble with them slipping once taped, but you could roll the tube back once it's on and use hair spray on the bar.

hockey tape on the other hand...

maybe possible to slide on 2 layers of inner tube? one shorter than the other
-
• #708
Might be possible with different sized tubes, but I think you'd struggle to slide one tube over another.
Are you thinking of a double layer for the tops?
You could try putting the shorter length on and then rolling it up towards the stem, then fit the full length piece and roll the short piece back on.
One point if using a full length on the whole bar, is that you will probably have to remove the clamp from the brake lever and open it out, to get it over the tube; screwing the lever back on can be a little fiddly.
This only works if the screw is in the lever, pointing towards the bar. Campag (for example) have the screw coming through the clamp, towards the lever, and you can't get it back in once the clamp is on the bar: just cut away the tube from the clamp area.

This is for a track bike, so no levers necessary

Why two layers? Extra thickness on the ends, sprinter stylee?
-
• #711
Just extra padding, just thinking when i am in the drops i don't really need it, but on the tops is when i'm likely to be riding over rougher ground, so its just a little something to help.
just a bit worried about using cloth tape to be honest as its so thin, but always wanted to try it, just suits classic builds a lot more, and harlequin with 2 rolls of the same colour looks great, to me anyway.

Yeah I was going to mention this, I use it for polo mallets. It's really sticky to start with, but it calms down a bit as it wears, but also is quite thin so you will probably need to rewrap the bars fairly often if you ride regularly.
I only tend to play polo a couple of times a week and a double wrapped handle lasts me a bout a month or two.

Might do hockey tape with Cinelli Jelly over the top for added comfort and durability.

Yo, bar tape aficionados. What's the general consensus on just wrapping the drops? Is it just suitable for track bars or can it look ok on more compact or traditional shape road bars? Brklz, obvsly.
-
• #715
if you're riding on the track, then OK.
if you're riding on the road, wrap all the way, your wrists/palms will thank you.

I'm prepping the Giant for possible track action.

I just wanna look good while my body fails me.

tubez for stealth; wrap fo' show

if you wrap hockey tape underneath the bar tape, don't expect the be able to reuse the bar tape, it will rip it to shit when you unwrap it.

If you are going to use jelly, why use hocky tape?

thinking of taping some bullhorns with yellow electrical tape and some black soft touch fizik tape on top, anyone done something similar, would the yellow peak through the perforations?
-
• #722
Probably not. Most of the colour through the perforations comes from the underside of the tape. You could colour in the under side of the tape yellow too.
-
• #723
If you could be bothered, you could go along the tape with a nail poking out the perforations to make the holes a little more pronounced and that should work.
-
• #724
I can clearly see the tape I have fixed the cables with under my microtex wrap.
