Depends what you want it for really...
I've used the VPN service from disconnect.me and really like it's tracker blocking features. I'm a fan of their collaboration with EFF as well.
mullvad and AirVPN are others I'm considering, both have good privacy credentials, but I prefer the tracker blocking of disconnect's VPN on iOS particularly.
I'm not using disconnect at the moment because their recent app update isn't currently supported on the iPad 2 or 3, but they assure me another update's coming soon.

Is PIA still recommended?
-
• #854
I use PIA for some things, but also have my own Digital Ocean server which I VPN my home into
-
• #855
PIA is OK but I find it slows down a bit at times. Fine for a bit of web browsing but if you're downloading then a lot of time it tops out at 20 Mbps.
I've heard good things about nordvpn but not used it myself

I've been considering putting Tomato or DD-WRT on my router, and forcing all traffic over VPN. That way, even things like my TV which don't support VPN will be ok. Has anyone tried this? Did it work out?
I'm in Australia and they have mandatory data-retention laws now.
I like the sound of a VPN that blocks trackers.

I haven't but when I looked into it I'm sure the conclusion was that router's don't generally have the processing power to do this and you end up with a significant overhead.

somewhere on here (this thread I think) @Velocio and I had a discussion about VPN and consumer hardware. The TL;DR is, if you want more than 10Mbps you need commercial hardware.
The standard netgear/linksys/etc... routers won't get much more than that, maybe 20 these days but not gonna hit 100+

Page 9 and some more on 27. I trawled this thread the other night looking for the same info.

Good to know. I have an RT-N66U (two in fact), but my connection is 50Mbps, so it sounds like I would take a considerable haircut. I'll have a look at re-purposing an old nettop.
Maybe it's time I got a rack.

Could a NAS be used to do this job? I don't have a full grasp of this yet.
-
• #863
I'd welcome any suggestions for small, low-power, simple to setup hardware that will do this and not lose me a load of bandwidth or cause me headaches.
-
• #864
Is that even possible tho'? There seem to be a lot of trade-offs, super fast router seems the only option...
-
• #865
I dunno, I don't really do networking - we have a team for all that shit :)
Something something DNS something something IP something cat 5 something something router. Zzzzzzz
All I want to do is have superfast internet whilst pissing off the fuckers trying to spy on everyone.

If I run all my phone traffic through IVPN, is there a way I can set it up to act like Ad Away so it uses a custom hosts or it's own DNS server somewhere to block all the ad/tracker sites?

@hippy @cyclotron3k
VPNing everything is something I've been looking at recently and was interested in the "slow" issue you mention. Is this related to the speed of the local h/w and/or the the choice of VPN service you use? Do you think with newer/faster DDWRT based h/w and non US based VPN service you could squeeze more MBs out of it? I've just freed up a WNDR3700V2 and was going to WWDRT it but maybe I'll replan it if the overhead is very limiting.

"Can anyone tell me what this means and how to fix it, I can connect to my VPN but I get this message after the connection: GDG: SIOCGIFHWADDR(lo) failed"
https://plus.google.com/112306869182334541681/postsI had the same issue just now. Uninstall and reinstalled OpenVPN and then downloaded fresh iVPN profiles from here: https://www.ivpn.net/setup/android-openvpn-for-android.html
Now working as expected.

I've not done it but I believe from VB's use it's a limitation of the hardware not my VPN service. Choice of VPN will obviously effect your speed but if the hardware is the limiter you're screwed anyway. If you have time, then test it and see how you go. Try a more local VPN - not sure why you'd pick one in the US unless you live there?

+1 for ExpressVPN, bought a 1 month subscription last year while working in the middle east, ended up signing up for the yearly subscription, now in to my second year, well worth it IMO and subscription covers two devices.
I have a referral link for 30 days free if anyone would like it?

So I bought a 2011 MBP for $50 that I will be using for my router. I have a spare T-bolt ethernet adapter. It will connect to my cable modem, the other will connect to a switch. Will run VyOS (or similar) in a VM on the MBP to do the actual routing. The reason behind this is I want three VPNs
1- My private one
2- Private Internet Access
3- WorkWifi, I'm still looking at the various 802.11A/C hardware out there. I've done a test already and the MBP using VPN in a VM can easily max out my 150Mbps connection.

My #1 workhorse is a late 2011 15" MBP, best machine they ever made... Still going strong, especially after Apple fitted a new screen, graphics card and logic board (free of charge) a couple of months back... I love it...
-

it had a dead hd, so work were selling it cheap.
I think it has the logic board problem, but with the screen disabled it's been running rock solid for 2 months

I know it's them. Typing yahoo into a browser is almost as quick as reopening the email to click the link so I went for the safer option anyway. Reset password to something really easy to guess. I'm sure Snowden would approve.
