I believe you are safe there.
That looks more like a flesh fly to me with the extendable suction tube for a mouth.
Horsefly just has the straight outta nightmare stab mouth afaik...

Anyone know what this is? I have never seen one before, it scurried across the floor of our tent a few moments ago. It was about 3cm long and pretty aggressive, here it is in its full 'come and have a go' pose'

Agreed. Not seen a garden orb weaver? like that before.
These guys all over our garden
A hoverfly (Volucella inanis), a Yellow Dung Fly (probably), and another orb spider. Noticeably fewer flying insects about and more spiders this morning down by the Thames. All with a new DSLR and second hand Tamron macro lens. Definitely a step up for me - I should have got them at the start of the summer.
Another backwards spider
These are ace
Loving all the spidery pics!
A few from today. Many, many spiders in the garden.
One of the common craneflies, probably Tipula paludosa and a Red Admiral caterpillar
Went to Wingham zoo last weekend and they have a new bug garden. At the end they have a good number of live insects and spiders. The camel spider was my favourite, I'll get some pictures next time.
A couple of bugs today.
What's the lens, out of interest?
