That's if you want to build them. If you want to fly them, keep plugging away at the FPS video games.

Hello guys, this isn't strictly a plane but I think it's pretty neat.
Some of you may know that one of my other geeky hobbies is collecting models, model car, planes, helicopters and engines.
Early last year a man called Ronal Valentine broke the record for the worlds smallest internal combustion engine, he managed to make an engine called 'blitz 0.05' this engine was smaller than anything seen before at 0.05cc it weighs only 5 grams and turns a 2.5"x1" propellor.
I am lucky enough to own one of these, only 25 were ever built and I managed to get the 2nd one.
Unfortunately for me (fortunately for those who can afford another) Ron broke the record 3 more times that year making engines of 0.042cc, 0.021cc and 0.006cc the smallest that currently holds re record weighs only 1 gram, I would love to own one some day.
The engines are commonly know as 'diesel' in the model world even though they run on a mixture of: kerosene, castor oil, di-ethyl ether and an ignition booster. The engines are compression ignition so rely on just the compression to ignite the fuel inside, they can run at VERY high RPM, the one that I have was recorded the only time we ran it at 30,000.
Not only are these engines hand made and examples of exceptional machining but they are works of art too.
All are two stroke and Ron has made all sorts of configurations such as radials engines, V8s, inline 4s, what this man can do is amazing. anyone who can afford to have one should just go check them out, the larger ones also run very well and I have had the luck to fly a few on home made planes.
I have not flown the smallest but one day I hope to, it could be the smallest radio controlled fuel powered aircraft on record. I'll not bore you anymore with words, here are some pictures of my favourite engine in the whole collection.

Here is a picture of the world record engine next to an american penny (remember these are smaller than ours) for scale.

If a toy aircraft can fly it's an aircraft regardless of it's size.

These pictures were taken 2nd October 64. I was the pilot. The pictures are original and not 'touched up'.
The 'Pongos' (Army types) were on a route march from Langebaan by the sea to Saldanha. The previous night in the pub one of them had said: "julle dink julle kan laag vlieg maar julle sal my nooit laat le nie"(You think you can fly low, but you will never make me hit the deck).
I went to look for them on the beach in the morning and was alone for the one picture. I was pulling up to avoid them.
In the afternoon I had a formation with me and you can see the other a/c behind me (piloted by van Zyl, Kempen and Perold)
A friend by the name of Leon Schnetler (one of the pongos) took the pics.
The guy that said "jy sal my nie laat le nie" said afterwards that he was saying to himself as I approached: "ek sal nie le nie, ek sal nie le nie"( I won't go down, I won't go down) and when I had passed he found himself flat on the ground.

So, as I understand those are 2 different flights? EDIT. Just occured to my pee brain that it could be taken further along the coast.

Yeah, there was a series by the same artist.

Its quite fun flying a 747 inverted underneath the golden gate bridge in x-plane, and then landing it on an aircraft carrier.
Likeaboss.

Would like to try that out for real...
Edit: it can't be done in real life because no fuel would reach the engines. You could do a barrel roll as long as you maintain at least 1g, then everything works fine.

Odd request but I'm looking for a sound sample of a c1920s rotary aircraft engine starting up and running. Anyone have any idea where i might be able to find such a thing?

This might do? It's a 1918 Gnome.

Can I ask what it is for?

Thats an odd engine, strange to see the cylinders going round the prop shaft.
-
• #1124
Why does it? Is it better?

^^ It's what they call a rotary. Not to be confused with the car engine more commonly know as the rotary which is actually a Wankel engine.
