  • All I'm saying is rotating wings would need much more complex mechanics at wing root for the moving control surfaces. The wing wouldn't create lift by being vertical when in rotorcraft mode.

  • The wings do rotate...

... horizontally - for storage on ships.

  • Some cool odd ball/experimental aircraft over on Gizmodo:

Stipa-Caproni, an experimental Italian aircraft with a barrel-shaped fuselage (1932)

Libellula, a tandem-winged and twin-engined British experimental plane which gives the pilot an excellent view for landing on aircraft carriers (1945)

    Etc...

  • So what does one look for in a good airport?

I look for a well thought out frontage combined with conveniently accessible parking. Bristol Lulsgate Airport has both.
Although to be fair, rail access leaves a lot to be desired.

  • ^^Just came here to post that.

    Awesome!

  • Fuck Stansted. Shit train service unless you want to pay, quick and easy to drive there but extortionate for parking, you have to pay even to pick up someone. They call it London, not as bad as Luton, but London it most certainly is not. The areas around stansted are sneered at by locals for the level of inbreeding and number of six fingered babies.

Take the bus. 8 quid to Stratford with National Express, as quick as the train and nicer. + you don't have to engage with the miserable italians working for terravision.

  • "So what does one look for in a good airport?"

Accessibility, decent lounge, and the fat cunt at the security desk not being a fat cunt.

*Also my flight should always depart from gate 7 or under, but that of course is not entirely a reflection on the airport itself.

I took terravision one, regretted it. £8 is cheaper than terravision too. Thanks for the tip.

  • Really good resource for information on planes. Helped me figure out if a custom or vintage would be the best buy.

  • New 747-8 and some nice graphic design....

  • Quite a bit of info about that on English Russia, search for Buran
    http://englishrussia.com/tag/buran/

  • My grandad was a test pilot and told the designer of this that it handled like a 'pregnant duck' on the maiden flight.

  • @tester, that's what I love about the Buran, it represents an ultimate collapse of one reality of technical supremacy into one where hospital staff are smoking weed in its remains in their lunch breaks. No one does post-apocalypse like Russia.

  • Everything after 1917 in Russia is post-apocalypse. The current Putin kleptocracy is not a counter-revolution, it's simply a continuation movement of the Leninist Vanguard Party

  • The Buran is a fairly sinister machine, it was basically a space-bomber. It had no non-military purposes, and was built in response to the US Space Shuttle, which the Soviets were convinced was to be used to lift nuclear weapons into orbit over their territory. Therefore they did what they usually did: shamelessly copy the broad concept and fill in the blanks with rather more agricultural Soviet technology.

You really haven't a clue, have you? Do your self a favour and read up on the subject, yeah?
