  • as much as i hate to say it - sounds like the sort of thing that could be done in midjourney quite easily? especially if looking for quick/cheap...

  • e.g. something like this?

  • As much as it pained me to do so, as an illustrator, I did try and do just that. I couldn’t come up with anything that didn’t have that AI vibe. I took lots of my own reference photos of textures from some fine Welsh castles to feed in to it and it was close, but not quite right. The initial tests from our fiverr artist were lots closer to what we’re after, but he has now gone cold and seems to be ghosting us :-/

If it wasn’t summer, I’d just go and take footage at aforementioned castles, but we can’t access them after sunset at the moment, sadly.

  • Not quite - actually a lot simpler than that. Here’s where we were at.

  • Hey thanks for this - loads better than the AI stuff I was coming up with!

We’ve actually found someone who looks like they’re exactly right. They’re building stuff in unreal, which will give us lots of control. They also have experience in virtual production which is ideal.

  • perfect! much better than doing stuff in midjourney if it can be avoided and puts food on the table for a real human who has doubtless spent years honing their craft.

VP stuff in unreal is pretty mindblowing - i went to the unreal conference at excel a few years back and i found the stuff they were doing with virtual studios and cameras really impressive.

the AI question gets thrown around in our studio a lot from those higher up the chain at the moment so i know how frustrating it can be when someone says, "can we use AI?"

i was almost embarrassed to suggest it tbh...

best of luck with the project!

  • Thanks! Yeah, I'm very much in favour of using a human over AI. Aside from any ethical issues, this guy and his approach mean that we have so much more control over details - which can be frustratingly out of reach with AI solutions!

We'll be using these rendered environments to project behind actors and props. Using a 3d environment like with unreal means that we can do stuff like matching real and virtual light sources and stuff like that. Fun!

  • very cool. share it when it's done if you can.

  • Will do! I'm a bit sore I'll be missing the actual shoot days in the studio, but I'll be hands on for the post stuff.
