  • After 5 years of daily cycling in London I finally came off my bike.

Was drinking at Royal Oak and as I cycled away, hit a speed bump I didn't see, bike disappears under my and I land hands first. Not too painful so carried on to the next party, sore wrists but nothing major I thought.

Woke up this morning with a dull ache in my left wrist, went to Homerton Hospitals walk in clinic and come out 3hrs later with a cast. Fractured my left wrist, 4-6 weeks in a cast coming up. Considering myself lucky it's my left hand, and that it's not worse than it is.

Tired of the cast already though, just got going properly with morning swims, runs and rides...

Anyway, really impressed with the care at homerton hospital, thought I'd be there all night.

Anyone knows if I can run/jog with a cast in say 2 weeks?

  • Ouch!
    Bad news chap.

Yeah 2-3 weeks should be ok to jog with.
You might get a bit of pain with the jolts and try not to swing your arm too much.
I've seen people (well 1 person anyway) swimming in a cast: wrapped up in polythene and taped to the arm.

    Heal up soon

  • been to the hospital again today to get a proper cast, doc told me i'm ok to run!

apparently a tricky bone to heal though, so 6 weeks in a cast coming up, and in case it doesn't heal it'll be an op where you take bone from the hip to replace it (!?)

  • Oh dear, the scaphoid. It's a right PITA. Breaks fairly frequently as it's the 'bridge' between the near and far row of little carpal bones.
Hope yours heals well and fast!

  • Broke my wrist a year and a half ago. Cycled with the cast on after two weeks. Ended up having to be in the cast for nearly 9 weeks. wrist still hurts now. dont cycle

  • yup, that's the one.

just found out that you can get waterproof casts with some technology from gore. anyone know if NHS can do it? or a private doc? I miss my swimming!

  • There are specially made plastic cast covers for swimming, the NHS gave me a leaflet for ordering them online when I broke my ankle but I don't recall the name.

  • yeah i've seen those, but apparently theres a cast that's waterproof, ie no need for cover

  • Heel the F up, sucky news, glad you are ok apart from the wrist.

  • PS: At least you'll be rolling in time for the warm weather.

  • ^ good point! :)

  • Accidentally* lifted something heavy with my injured hand last night. it now feels exactly like day 1 after I got the cast... Did i manage to open the fracture perhaps? Am I back to day 1 in terms of healing?

    *not really. I'm a retard
