Electrostatics on Roller

  • Not sure if here is the right place to post, since it's more about human body than the machines, but there we go~

Basically every time I use the rollers with PVC drums, electrostatic charge begin building up in my body seconds after I start. My hairs stand on their ends. Often I can feel the charges passing into my body from the seatclamp to my legs. And everytime I touch the wall I can hear sounds, the hairs drop would down before standing up again. It happens to both me and my partner on different bikes. The roller is placed on carpet, if they helps.

Roller company says they have not heard of anything like that before. Just wondering if this is normal and is there anyway to mitigate the above hazards. Any input would be appreciated.

    I had the same - I'm sure it's a common issue.

I knocked a nail into the wall, attached a wire to it, with a crocodile clip on the other end, which I clipped to the rear dropout of the bike. No more shocks.

  • Wire from the saddle clamp to a radiator, if it's a proper plumbed in system it'll be earthed.

  • Maplin sell antistatic straps which you clip to a radiator or other route to Earth (some have a standard plug with only the Earth pin in metal) for about £7, but the methods above would probably work just as well.

  • Thanks all for the input. Bought an anti-static wrist strap from the bay.
