  • Looks like I'm going to a black tie do next week so need to rent a tux. Can anyone recommend a good place? Don't want to look like a clown if I can avoid it.

Any general styling tips is appreciated too. I know how to wear a suit but not a tuxedo. What's the do's and dont's?

  • shine your shoes

  • I know how to wear a suit but not a tuxedo. What's the do's and dont's?

Don't: Call it a tuxedo, unless you want people to think you're a filthy colonial.
    Do: Keep it simple.
Do: Braces or a cummerbund. I prefer the latter, but.
Do: Keep the jacket black and the shirt white.
Do: Have a proper bow tie. They're really not that hard. And they look good even when undone.
Do: remember that the pleats of a cummerbund face upwards, so that you can keep your opera tickets in them.
Don't: Forget the pocket square. Fold it square or with points depending on your lapels.

  • Dos and don'ts:

    1. it's only called a Tuxedo in America. In Britain it is a dinner jacket. (the trousers/shirt and tie bit is implied)
    2. Don't rent a single-breasted one if it has notched lapels. DJs should have peaked lapels, even if single breasted, or a shawl collar.
    3. don't wear a cummerbund if you are wearing a waistcoat, or a double-breasted jacket.
    4. braces or belt, not both
    5. don't wear a shirt with a stand-up pointed collar. Get a shirt with a normal fold-down collar, double cuffs and a pleated front.
    6. waistcoats should be black and the same material as the jacket.
    7. Black only for ties and cummerbunds. Whites only for shirts and pocket squares. Your job is to blend in and let the women be the main attraction.

Surely you mean Waistcoat or Cummerbund.
Braces are essential for holding the trousers up, even if you have a cummerbund

  • What size are you? I have one you could borrow.

  • fuckin aye, this is what i'm talking about. awesome info, keep it coming

  • What size are you? I have one you could borrow.

    no idea. i'm 187cm / 75kg

  • Ignore these classless reprobates! Midnight blue and velvet or GTFO.

.. and Australia. And since you mashed some French and German together invented the language you should be clever enough to deal with both options.

The guys and gals in Moss Bross near Liverpool St sorted me out for the one and only black tie event I've done.

  • What am I saying?? Caribbean dinner suit FTW!

As long as you get a proper shirt and not the peaked collar one.

Oh, and a proper bow tie.
    It's just like tying shoelaces

You can wear a belt with a cummerbund. I just think that they look a bit weird with braces.

But you are right about the waistcoat.

Mind, I also wear a cummerbund with a double-breasted jacket because I overheat and so the jacket's off after dinner. So feel free to ignore me. :)

  • Just don't go to any event that expects you to dress up like a tory. Simple.

  • do you wear a wet blanket to parties?

  • check and check, thankyou!

  • no

  • No. If your tux is black your shoes should match. And not be brogues ideally.

The tux you could borrow from me would be 40' chest, regular.

  • Just don't go! You have the wrong shoes!

  • Bollocks to that. Wear any old black suit, black shoes, and white shirt. Buy a thin tie from M&S and some shiny cufflinks. Nobody will notice you anyway, so don't break the bank.
