Like Escape from Meriden but on bikes. Get as far as you can away (as the crow flies) from a start point in 24h.

    Summer Solstice (June 28th).

  • @skinny I missed your insta q&a but thought this was super interesting.

Would love if you did a video specifically on this aspect including your approaches to meditation, positive self talk and whether you do any specific brain training?

I remember a while ago you recommended a science of ultra podcast episode where one of the guests had a study finding that practicing “stroop” style response inhibition tasks resulted in substantial improvements in time to exhaustion (3x control). Do you do anything like that at all?

  • Loads and loads and loads of m------ation

  • Mastication?

  • Seems kind of a dumb time to be doing things like this.

  • Seems kind of a dumb time to be doing things like this.

I was going to mention that. It seems a North America focused thing, and the restrictions are a lot less there.

Completely unworkable for Wales/Scotland at the moment. Tricky for England (as you're not supposed to sleep anywhere other than your primary residence, so planning a 24h ride with some bivvying at the end is probably not going to go down well with the authorities.)

Who knows what will be in place in 5 weeks or so though.

  • Yeah, really like the idea of it, but now comes across as bit irresponsible to encourage 24hr of endurance and the risks contained. I'm sure others would disagree though.

  • My initial thought was, that looks awesome. Then after about a minute I realised that I would be hundreds of kms away from home, desperate for a shower, food, bed etc etc. I think there has to be some responsibility from organisers to not encourage things like this.

  • There is a thread for this already
Maybe it should be in here

  • My initial thought was, that looks awesome. Then after about a minute I realised that I would be hundreds of kms away from home

for me it was "after about a minute I realised that I would be dozens of kms away from home, unable to leave the country". So I'll probably ride around the border instead.

  • Ah, search fail for me then.

  • not supposed to sleep anywhere other than your primary residence

Where's that documented? There's so many frickin' guidance files on gov.uk I have no idea what I'd even look at.

  • Maybe. But I'm just an idiot bumblig around in the dark. What I do might work, but I'm not psychologist. I'd suggest going and reading stuff by psychologist and then see what of it works for you.

  • Maybe... but you seem like an interesting idiot with their head at least reasonably well screwed on (barring the obvious insanity implied by the races you choose😀).

Also if you were talking about such a topic, I like Sean Bowden’s question “tell us about a time in a race when things got really dark. How did you get into it and what did you do to pull through”.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/news/covid-19-essential-travel-guidance

    "
Essential travel does not include visits to second homes, camp sites, caravan parks or similar, whether for isolation purposes or holidays. People must remain in their primary residence. Not taking these steps puts additional pressure on communities and services that are already at risk.
    "

Obviously this doesn't apply to essential journeys (i.e. key workers who stay nearby work somewhere, or essential business travel [not sure what kind of business travel is essential right now]) or children whose parents live apart, etc.

(Of course it's not explicitly clear. Tories wouldn't want to be pinned down on anything in particular would they!)

  • There was government talk early this week of relaxing camping guidelines imminently

  • I guess.you have to go on a journey of self discovery, one so confronting most would rather not know.
I know everything about myself, and thus knowledge is power. Knowing yourself you can learn and experiment with ways to extract the best from it. But yeah, you have to confront some stuff to get there.

  • That's fine. "You should stay at home as much as possible." is what I thought was the case.

So anyone that doesn't do this is fair game for flamethrowing.

  • No food stops for 2000km. Oof

  • For a 2000km race that's just not really feasible....is it?

  • Yeah it is.

    You can cross Antarctica.

  • No stops for water unless you find an open air tap somewhere or drink from a stream. For 2000km. Ouch.

  • Well yeah of course, but it seems like this would be incredibly difficult. Not to mention the weight and of course the problem of finding water. Fairplay to anyone that gives it a go.
