Awesome bb mounted gearbox!

rather clever system in development by a team of fiendishly clever Germans....can see it working well on DH/FR bikes, but maybe commuters/tourers too?....align it with a belt drive and laugh in the face of dirt!

  • i thought ho---hum another dumb gear box.

but no that does look sweet.

  • tl;dr

I'd like to see it on a bike.

  • So what's different from that to all the other gearboxes that have been around for years?

Also it's pointless to move it onto commuters unless it have a noticeably smaller transmission drag as hub gears are already up to 11spd and reliable

  • Heavy frame instead of heavy wheels?

  • That was the mtb reasoning. You want the least amount of weight in the wheels so that they can react quickly to bumps and give you maximum traction.

  • A lovely idea, but it's a whole bike frame not just an after market gear box (Rohloff etc).

  • So what's different from that to all the other gearboxes that have been around for years?

Also it's pointless to move it onto commuters unless it have a noticeably smaller transmission drag as hub gears are already up to 11spd and reliable

And attached to really heavy wheels that can be easily stolen, concentrate a load of weight at the back of the bike, making the balance of the bike all wrong, making it more likely to damage rims and break spokes. And the designs may well be compromised by the need to rotate inside a hub.

Commuters buy all sorts of inappropriate shite. 21 speed deraileurs, front and rear suspension, fat tyres. They'd buy this because it's bling.

I'd love it on a tourer. Nice light wheels with all the weight an complication low down in the middle where it's least intrusive.

  • I hadn't really thought of the thought the positioning of the gearbox would make that much of a difference. And if it were used on a road bike then it would fill up the space between the bottle on the seattube and the bottle on the downtube, so not intruding into useful space.

I still don't see the point of this thread. Gearboxes have been around for years.

    voila!

  • Was that from the tynanspaste.co.uk?

er...just to share info about an interesting new option with like minded bike obsessives really...im sorry if you disapprove! ; )
(you can allways ignore this thread from now on)

and yes there have been others ( earliest was by a French company called Vilex i believe.....a 5 speed as featured on Mervilex bikes...buggered if i can find any pics mind...) but they never caught on eh?...whereas this looks like it may actually reach the market place

answers a lot of questions in my book....if i could afford a custom built MTB frame wrapped around it i would definitely pay for a maintenance free(ish) mud proof, great ground clearance, no rattling exposed flimsy mechs solution...whats not too like? annual oil change and nothing else to do other than ride?

  • annual oil change? that sounds like the amount of maintenance my bike gets anyway.

  • Sounds awesome and looks very neat. Shame about the weight tho, 2.7kg.

  • I think it looks very interesting, but it is a bit of a fatty.

That weight is nice and low, below the axle line so should aid stability, but still.
