As part of Bike Week we're hosting a Beginners Bike Polo weekend on the 18th and 19th of June at the centre of Hackney Downs in conjunction with the LCC and Hackney Council, it will hopefully evolve into a regular NE London beginners session.
Everyone's welcome, we recommend bringing your own bike (one that you feel most comfortable on) and we'll introduce you to the world of bike polo (mallets, balls and some loaner bikes will be available).
We'll be here from 11am until 6pm on Saturday and Sunday and there will be people on hand to show you the basics (tripoding, shuffles, dribbling, shooting) before you enter the court. At 6pm we'll head to a nearby pub and enjoy the remainder of the sunshine.
All abilities welcome, this could be the start of your journey to next year's Euros or Worlds!
Ah, good one, Jon. I've put the start time as 10am everywhere, need to change that and the name of the event where I've entered it in events listings. I've just put it up on the new LCC web-site:
It's all very new, but hopefully the new events listing pages will attract a few eyeballs.
Should the poster have the times on it, too?
nice poster, reminds me of the bbc ads, in a good way.
Oliver: I'll be there from 10am, so no worries. The official times (for the council) is 11am until 6pm. I've made a new poster (with times) to go up in LMNH tonight.
Might be some takers at my work, can I get a paper copy of the poster if you've got extras?
Could you maybe upload a PDF of this so we can print some?
Would love to help but it's my Birthday weekend.
Here you go: PDF of poster (A4 is legible, A3 is ideal)
nice poster, you stole my design for my clock screensaver, gonna sue the lhbpa.
My eyes are like sponges. (I wanted to do some sort of spirograph thing, but it looked lame.)
you'll like this, my mate si made it
^ I've been playing with that ever since i got home. sooooooo relaxing.
Jon, can you make this a Farcebook event and we can invite polo-curious friends?
Oh, here's the Bike Week page, by the way:
Let me know if any details need correcting. I assume that the bit about loaner bikes and mallets is true?
I've also put 'not suitable for under-16s', but again can change that--I wasn't too sure about legal issues.
Yep, that all sounds fine. Under 16s is possible (parental waiver), but this is more of an over 16s weekend really.
Wouldnt wanna put my name on a list then not turning up but I am moving house this weekend hence if everything is sorted early then I will make an appearance. Also, have told a group of kids from Newt (the ones who always borrow my bike and which I have promised mallets) that the event is happening and they said they will try to make it. As it is quite a few of the kids go to Downs for football training.
I'll be there tomorrow from 10.30 onwards (it starts at 11) and look forward to sharing a beer, a BBQ and my bike/mallets with any newcomers, fingers crossed it's a gloriously sunny weekend.
I'll pop down for a looksee, if deemed safe don't mind lending my bike.
Heading to Downs early ...
looks like i'll have to pass by tomorrow instead
Don't worry about formatting, just type in the text and we'll take care of making sense of it. We will auto-convert links, and if you put asterisks around words we will make them bold.
