Pre-loaded with which maps though? There's road maps for every country and topo maps for them if you're mountain biking. The SD card version of the maps doesn't work with MapSource application whereas the DVD version does.
I would buy the unit by itself and then buy the Europe City Navigator DVD from Amazon.

Navigating with a Garmin isn't ideal.
You're welcome to borrow mine if you only need it for France - I have the European Road maps. -

Going to get an 800 this week... but cant work out which bundle to get.
I'm planning on getting the performance & navigation bundle: http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/3511/garmin-edge-800-performance-and-navigation-bundleIt says that it comes with a garmin SD card pre-loaded maps.... but then in the Q&A section, a fella asks if it comes with maps, and they say no, he needs to buy extra maps. WTF?
I am confused. Why call it a navigation bundle, if you cant navigate with it?
I would like genuine Garmin maps, as I dont want to dick around with downloading ripped ones onto and SD card.... I also need it to have maps of Europe.Has anyone bought the Performance & Navigation bundle?... does it come with European maps?
Any advice?
I kind of decided that I'm just going to get the 'performance' bundle and torrent the maps or whatever... The extra cost of legitimate maps made my wallet break into a huge rash.
Does this mean an end to your iphone fueled 130mph laps of HH hoops?

Thanks for the help folks.
I'm going to get the Perfprmance & Maps bundle, as it's only £20 more than the performance bundle. If the maps are crap, I'll look into this open source business. Thanks for the offer Em, but I have been meaning to get one for ages. And the upcoming trip has just made me get my ass in gear and get round to actually buying one! Yours has prolly got Garmin herpes or some shit anyway.... I'll take you bike, avec new wheels, for the week though.....

You can't even LOOK at my bike with the new wheels. Let alone touch or ride it.
Unless you meant the Moser in which case you can take a photo (To keep in your jersey pocket).

I dont plan on wearing a jersey.
I'm told this is not acceptable. -

FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU Garmin.
A guy I ride with has had his auto stop going beserk since the update, registering a 1 kph speed when stationary. I have not dared to do it yet....

I have open street maps on my 705 and Etrex Hcx. IMHO they offer more detail than the Garmin maps as demonstrated above, I haven't used the garmin map in a long time and wish I hadn't spent extra on it.
Have a read http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Main_Page
For Europe there are comprehensive maps of canal routes through Belgium and Holland.
If you're stuck for something to do you can even contribute to the map itself, say if you ride a small road that's not on the map.

If I record a "course" and send it to my Edge 200, will it record my ride as an activity as usual, as well as guiding me on the route?
I guess the directions it gives are pretty basic, but I'll give it a go tomorrow just to see. Can't imagine it's something I'll use a lot.
-
• #238
Yes, your ride will still be recorded, even if it goes off course, or continues beyond the course, or whatever.
The directions are fine, though it helps if you have a vague idea of where you're going. it's just an LCD line, with turns scrolling down from the top of the screen about 100-200m before you reach them. If you go off course (which sometimes includes times where the mapping has auto-routed the wrong way around a roundabout) it makes a disapproving chirrup noise, like an angry robot cat looking at birds nearby. Then you get an arrow pointing in the direction of the nearest bit of the course to where you currently are.
I've used it twice. The no frills functionality is perfect for those who prefer to navigate by memory anyway. The only shortcoming is the lack of speed / distance data whilst following a course, though if you get bored of looking at the LCD line, or decide it's superfluous at any given time, you can always come out of that screen for a bit.

OK, sounds good. Ideally I'd love turn-by-turn because I sometimes have a day off and fancy a longer ride out of London but get a bit intimidated by routes etc and end up doing the same old: Richmond Park or whatever. Maybe I should have plumped for an 800... Still, I've done a course to get to Parkrun tomorrow and I'll see how it goes.

Battery in my Garmin 705 run out after six hours navigating and cadence. I suppose they need replacing. Anybody ever done that?
-
• #241
My 705 seems to navigate on the wrong side of the road: wrong way round r'bouts, up one-way streets. Can't find a way to fix it. Anyone know how?

Where and how are you getting the routes from to put in it?

^ Mainly plotting manually on Garmin Connect (where I can't find any options either) but it's done the same thing with other people's Bikeroutetoaster or RIDEWITHGPS routes.

It is a well known problem on garmin connect, presumably brt and ridewithgps use the same/similar mapping algorithm.
Routes work ok when created with garmin basecamp and mapsource.

7 hours so same question from me, anyone got any experience with this?
I have watched this How to Replace Your Garmin Edge 705 Battery - YouTube
and it appears that the only thing to be careful of is tucking the wires in when you reassemble. Anything else? -

Anyone used an extended battery pack with their Garmin, like this?
Hey Hippy. Had a bit of a better test of this yesterday. I got...
11 hours out of the external battery overnight.
12 hours out of the internal battery during the day.
The unit had 14% of the battery power left at the end.I also hooked up the solar panel thingy to Rob's backpack in the afternoon and that was back on 50% by the end (we didn't need it).
I did use maximum power saving options though (night display, 10% backlight, 15sec backlight off, auto lap set to 5mile, no directions - just a line on the map etc...) but my unit is 18months old so I guess it's hardly 'fresh'.
All in all, I think it would have just scraped through 24 hours but it would be difficult to recommend for a TT unless nearly all of it was in daylight!

I just made a quick course to test out navigation on the Edge 200, but when I select it the computer asks if I want to begin recording a ride. I say yes, then it takes me to the speed/time screen and I can't see the course. Can you only follow a course and see the line/arrow if you don't also record your ride? Or is there a setting to get you to the line/arrow screen?
-
• #249
Ah, after spending ages trying to get that to work I sort it out just after asking LFGSS. Typical...
I set auto scroll to off, then you can rotate through the different screens manually with the bottom-left button - so you can leave it on the courses screen if you want. Now I'm off to try it out and see if courses actually work well enough to navigate. Any experience?
I'm off to Cornwall for the first time soon and want to drop some nice routes in so I can not worry about maps etc.

Anyone know how to get a 410 to stop navigation?
I cannot for the life of me find an option in a menu anywhere for this.
