Local Wild Psyclo-camping Advice

  • Exams finish for me this week. Got some stuff to pic up from ronnie / rob on Sat, then gonna carry on out towards the peaks.

Any ideas of a good wild camping spot, quiet, nice views, out of sight, preferably reachable via not too many hills (touring on a 42 x flipflop 15/18 fixed!). Undulating is ok, bloody steep is not...

If anyone wants in let me know,

  • You might find somewhere down the Goyt Valley, it's pretty sheltered too. It's a steep drop down into the Goyt Valley, but it's possible to get out via the road up to the C&F (which might be doable on 42x18), it's certainly the shortest walk.

What time you coming over, as I'll ride over there, if that's where you decide to go. Your messenger bag is at mine BTW.

This is the area I mean

  • how fast do you cycle disrail n who are you?

  • Another alternative is the Derwent Valley the other side of Snake Pass (we could reach it going via Chapel-en-le-frith and Hope. Let us know.

  • how fast do you cycle disrail n who are you?

disrail is Doug and hes faster than you Paul

  • does psyclo camping mean you'll be eating magic mushrooms doug?

  • Ah I wish i was fast......

Derwent sounds great Ronnie, but I'll be a little on the slow side....

I'm gonna be walking quite a few hills (perhaps up and down!) and probably just averaging 10-12mph loaded up. Gonna be taking a 1 man tent, sleeping bag, roll mat, tools, jacket, stove, meths, food etc.. so not traveling too light...

  • Also chapel to hope!!! I'll definitely be walking down Winnats....

  • Aye - well it's either that or over Snake Pass via Glossop, walking down is easier than up. There's always the possibility of a train to Hope/Bamford if you prefer ?

You coming over Saturday then ?

    10-12 mph sounds good !

  • Yeah I'll be over about lunch time. We can discuss a route then. Weather's not looking too shabby :)

  • Aye - wrap up mind. See you saturday.

  • Got some friends coming up from Brighton to Manchester soon, and we wanna go camping. Anyone know anywhere near a nearish train station that we can camp for free? just a bit of open land somewhere? thinking a bit Trainspotting?

  • surely head out of town towards the hills. somewhere like glossop and then your in the country side in 10 mins

  • I'm ashamed to say I've not left central Manchester really whilst I've been here, that sounds good though

  • One or two quiet spots near the eastern end of Edale could work for you (plus decent cafes for breakfast in Hope) - be discrete though, make sure you're camped away from eyelines from the lanes, as I've seen farmers call the cops to remove wild campers in the Peaks before. Train to Hayfield or Edale - don't go fixed!

  • not cycling, the others don't have bikes

  • could try hebden bridge(chorlton with hills) or greenfield and head towards dovestones
