Urgent Help: Open Office

Posted on
  • Right so I have a Mac, and downloaded open office so I could do useful things, but when I download a powerpoint presentation, all the special characters (greek, arrows, etc) come up as these random ass squiggles....

What the hell do I need to download to convert random ass squiggles into normal text?

I can't seem to find anything helpful on the Open Office Website, and since you lot are skilled with these electronic typewriter jobbies.....

    Many thanks.

  • Probably need the Microsoft fonts that contain the symbols in question.

  • can you not get office for mac for students cheap from the uni?

  • i found open office to be a complete ball ache so acquired a torrent of ms office and its much better

  • Yeah, figure out what font they were originally written in, then download that.

    probably....

  • Its nasty being forced to give cash to microsoft, but it should last forever, and its pretty cheap for students IIRC...

  • Ok so apparently I've got the right font- arial.
    any other ideas?

  • What file type is it opening as?

  • .ppt

  • ok good, I don't know then - as you were

  • You can send it to me if you want, I'll pdf it and send it back. PM for email addres

  • Are there not extras for office.. like additional typesets?

was your install of OO a full one or just a quick install?

  • This isn't much help, but I've always had similar problems trying to get powerpoint files to show up properly in open office (on a mac). I have a feeling it is nothing to do with the font and just basic incompatibility between MS powerpoint and open office. Word seems to translate better.

Have you tried opening the powerpoint in Apple's Keynote? In my experience it does a better job on powerpoint files than open office and is £11.99 via the app store at the mo.

my internet speed is way too slow for that, I'm on like .1 kb/s... or so it feels.
    Thanks for the offer though!

Think I;m just going to buy office.

  • You could also try uploading to Google Docs

  • I often fail to open word docs properly on the mac, even with legitimate word. I almost always have to change the font because the spacing is all wrong.
