any advice would be welcome as im a novice at this
    ps
    im a retro roadbike lover

    cheers

  • You could get a nicer SLX frame for cheaper, wouldnt be brand new though.

  • But the frame maker is always more important than the frame material and they seem to have a good reputation.

  • Even so, Im sure you could find a Guerciotti (or equivalent quality brand) frame for cheaper than £299 that was built from a better tubing than Thron.

That said, those frames on the planet x website do look very nice.

  • Possibly. It looks like a good frame to me. I think I had better wait for AndyP to tell me what I really think though.

Go for it. A 67 per cent discount? If you don't get on with it you won't lose money if you sell it on.

  • Just checking, are you planning on making this a fixed/singlespeed? As the dropouts won't be suitable for it...

If you are after a fixed, this frame is the same price and I've heard good things about them, plus they look pretty nice I think as well.

  • It's not a super light frame, nor is it super fancy tubing, but you'd be looking at £400+ for the equivalent 631 Bob Jackson, say, so it's a decent price for a lugged frame made in europe. Provided you don't try to do tricks/polo on it or crash it hard, it should last long enough to pass onto your kids too. Unless you fancy hanging around waiting for something notably better to come up, I'd say go for it.

  • 1inch headtube, bit heavy, steel fork.
if retro floats your boat then why not, at least it's got some kind of warranty unlike most overpriced secondhand stovepipe frames.

  • As mentioned by Monsta, it's not a track/fixed frame so if you wanted to run it as a singlespeed you'd need a chain tensioner and fixed would require a lucky "magic gear".

  • Fair enough for the money, but yes, heavy old lump. Would look nice with the right build though and make a nice cruising about ride.

  • Hang On, It comes with a DA Headset!

  • I's guess 1" ones are pretty cheap now. Not exactly Record though.

  • When I think of the sexy dutch imports that rih sells here I have to say no.

    £360

  • Wouldn't buy one at £899!

  • It looks like it's only available in orange in 57cm?

If that's your budget for a lugged steel frame then you can get something really special second hand...

  • Saw this thread and thought the title was 'advice on this forum - is it a bargain?'

    Yes, it is.

  • thanks for all the replys.just seen this

and being a novice getting one already built seems to me the way to go.....so i will keep searching

  • Cool, didn't someone say the other was 57cm? This is 60cm...
Do you know what size you are meant to be looking for?

There's a nice brothers bike on here for sale, go for that, you won't regret it!
It seems like you have a lot of reading to do and to take on converting a road bike to fixed gear can be a ball ache if you don't know what you're looking for...

  • im not interested in a fixie (as my knees are to old ) just looking for a nice steel road bike 59-60 cm....cheers i will keep looking

  • Take your time, great stuff pops up here every day. Figure out exactly what you want, as In 'dream bike' territory. You'll find something soon enough, at a fraction of the cost of ebay, gumtree etc.

Yes but are you looking for single speed? Same applies, just not as much worry about having to get strong cranks/sprokets...
