  • Closing poll now :)

  • Flippin' 'eck. Chill chaps. He eats veggie every day with me by choice, he can eat what he likes.
Please don't be offended L&W. What day(s) works for you both?

  • It would be great to have Chris along, but why get his better other half to 'guarantee' this for him? :) I think I can speak for all when I say that it would be hugely appreciated if he sampled the veggie menu on this occasion. I'm not very uptight about that sort of thing, but the theme of the evening is 'veggie/vegan nosh-up', and it would slightly defeat the purpose?

After thinking about this overnight, I'm in complete agreement with this. Every single other meal I go to with friends or partner's friends I say nothing about people eating meat - and dont go off on a mad preach even when I get asked about veganism.

If its a vegetarian get together it would be good for a change not to see someone at the table eating something which the rest of the party is pretty much opposed to. And that they understood that before they came.

  • And ^ its not intended to offend anyone either - but it is a vegetarian get together.

  • So, the Doodle says: **

  • My initial comment was tongue in cheek, veggie food would more than likely have been eaten. We were really looking forward to having the opportunity to catch up with some good old friends, however, with this hostile response (not MM's above comment obviously). We're out.

  • booo :(

  • Perfect, will be bringing a pluses with me.

Frankly I thought the veggie nosh up doesn't necessary mean you have to eat 100% vegs.

If there's a nice sounding meal that happen to have meat, I'd go for that.

  • Perfect, will be bringing** pulses **with me.

So you don't have to eat veg ;)

  • Frankly I thought the veggie nosh up doesn't necessary mean you have to eat 100% vegs..

Little bit insensitive though, given how many vegetarians have to endure meat-eaters going on and on about how meat is murder and murder is delicious at every fucking gathering we attend, no? Would be nice not to have to deal with it for once. Up to you tho kids.

  • Somehow you describe it as if eating meat is similar to passive smoking.

  • Not similar. I like the smell of smoke.

  • Somehow you describe it as if eating meat is similar to passive smoking.

Ed, while some of the vegetarians may be in it purely for health reasons, others have chosen their diet according to personal morality (which covers all the vegans, by definition). While they will mostly keep their own counsel when eating with carnivores, at a specifically vegetarian meal they should be able to expect not to have to do that.

I occasionally eat meat, but I'd see it as very inconsiderate, if not plain rude, to do that at the vegetarian nosh-up.

  • if you are noshing on a vegetarian, is that not eating meat?

  • And so begins the inevitable march of the fucking idiots

  • It wasn't meant to be rude, or hostile but echoing others, it is the veggie/vegan nosh up. Wouldn't exactly hurt to eat vegetarian food, tongue in cheek or not. I don't know you, but please do come.

Sometimes that's just how it feels, for me.

  • BleakReference - why you no come this time?

  • Perhaps I am just in a bad mood, but if you are going to get offended that people at a veggie gathering would want you to eat vegetarian, you may have some issues to work out.

  • People,

This week and the next are the Alphonso Mango season, surely we should go for a veggie that have Alphonso Mango to serve.

Last week, I and Kati were busy making all sort of mango dessert, breakfast, dinner, lunches, etc. before it's over till next year.

Breakfast today; mango lassi with cardamom, bit of sugar, handful of ice with home made yogurt.

    Fucking. Delicious.

I don't think Julia got offended as such, and certainly not offended at the request to eat veggie, but was rather made sad at the lack of welcoming that the reaction implied, especially as Chris isn't exactly a rabid meat-eater. At least, that's how I read her. I think something like this can stop being about the issue very quickly and feel purely personal. I can understand her feeling.

    Event derail >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • Fair enough, we can wait till next year exactly for them to be in season again.

  • OMG, just been investigating. I see what you mean: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/apr/24/alphonso-mango-chickpea-salad-recipe

If Ottolenghi says "A ripe alphonso mango is one of the best things you'll ever put in your mouth", they must be good.

    Mmmmmm mango.....

    Where did you gets yours?

  • Ed, any of us can go find a mango on our own initiative. But tearing up the nearly-achieved-agreement on where to go eat is unhelpful. Not least because the mangoes will probably be out of season by the time anything new is agreed. If you really want to be constructive, go find some places that are serving them (as well as other vegetarian food) and come back with a list.
