  • nah i was right:

7.4 – Ball-joint and side-joint: Not to be confused with a scoop pass, toss or other ball handling. The ball-joint / side-joint is defined as pinning the ball between an open end of the mallet head and the playing surface and then dragging it. Ball-jointing / side-jointing will be allowed ONLY in the player’s defensive zone. Ball jointing / side-jointing in the offensive zone will result in the ball turnover and concession of half-court.

  • fuck this, i'm going to play onlive (awesome).

    1. gabes.
    2. snoops.
      3.
      4.

might actually get some work done.

That's what I thought I was saying, oh well.

You owe me a beer, Spoony C...

  • Conceding possession is proper draconian, imo.

Snoops, what you indadvertedly described is a better version. (i.e. you must pass the ball if you BJ in offense, but in defense, you can do it at will).

Actually, maybe it isn't, does it matter to people that they are allowed to bj to halfway, but not over, but can then shuffle the ball to goal, then score?

    If it ain't broke.

  • In the NA ruleset, you can ball joint in your defensive half only, so you can ball joint to halfway, then must stop, but then are free to score.

So what does it take to change this for the league. BJ in your own half is great for long accurate passes as well as a speedy attack from the back wall (if that makes sense). I thought the only reason the rule was brought in was to stop people BJing all the way up to goal and then tapping it in.

  • Yeh exactly - NA introduced it so they could still speedily attack from the back.

You could write a rule, say it's in the interest of worldwide uniformity and comprehensiveness and then we'd all vote or something? (for the league i mean)

Would you like to see ball turnover for doing it in offense? Or just the stipulation that passing is vital? I am leaning toward the latter, then maybe the rest of the world will follow.

  • Not sure, maybe NA rules. Not fussed really but to be able to pin the ball from the back wall would be a good thing.

  • Having to pass post-BJ is difficult to ref, agreed.

Having to issue a ball turnover in the offensive half is lame though (especially on the boards where it's kind of "allowed" but not officially) and the NAH have failed to accurately describe when a BJ, becomes a scoop, becomes an egg and spoon, etc (in my opinion).

I imagine we'll absorb this NAH rule (and others) for next season, Bill's keen to align the rulesets, whereas last year I was attempting not to piss people off (changing rules/London tradition) whilst trying to keep in-line.

There are very few times when the pass/stop BJing in the offensive half make a difference to a play, one favours individual skill and the other a team game/play.

Snoops: Cheap shots are hated/loved in NA, I don't care either way, although it does make sense that the game becomes "live" after a goal (the ball crossing the line from the shot could count but would be difficult to track and you couldn't apply rules to the shot itself - scoop shot for example - as the game was dead, etc). I have yet to see this rule applied this year in the UK, so it's probably a pointless debate for us anyway... cheap shots are lame and players would start to "game" the crossing/reset process to ensure they have a man on the net (a lame situation and bad for scheduling - a little).

  • players would start to "game" the crossing/reset process to ensure they have a man on the net (a lame situation and bad for scheduling - a little).

I've only seen this happen once Jono. Guess who it was Jono?

  • Hah, it was me, you were trying a cheap acceleration move, Bill told me off for it... I maintain that you "shocked" me into stopping and were playing recklessly (lies).

  • cheap shots are lame and players would start to "game" the crossing/reset process to ensure they have a man on the net (a lame situation and bad for scheduling - a little).

I've been doing this since the rule was brought in. I won't cross back over the line after a goal until I know my team mates are in position. And I will take legal "cheap" shots as long as other teams don't do this.

If the ref wants to have a go about timewasting they can, but so far they haven't.

Play to the rules (and the ref), not what someone considers "lame".

  • WIn at all costs?

  • Win at all costs that are allowed by the rules, yes.

  • Jacob completely destroyed that tactic in Copenhagen, by saying he would disallow any goals from a restart where he didn't feel the defending team were ready.

I didn't like it on a personal level, but it worked fairly well. It's just hard to define, and will end up being the ref's opinion.

  • Cheap shots are lame... End of story...

  • so i can fiegn not being ready, after every restart and claim against it if a goal is scored?

  • Well, that's why that rule is potentially a minefield, but the spirit of it is good.

  • I always try and remember to hang back if I'm last over the half-court line...

    Because cheap shots are lame...

  • And I will take legal "cheap" shots as long as other teams don't do this.

There are no legal cheap shots, just illegal cheap shots (currently).

Play to the rules (and the ref), not what someone considers "lame".

When discussing the rules (and possible changes), I think it's ok to consider what's lame (or not) in polo as otherwise you'd never change anything?

  • Hi everybody!!

First of all, thanks for the support you gave us during and after the WHBPC!! Was great to read you guys!!

Then some points I have to tell you.
This Highlight Video's got a wrong title, it's a crash compil recorded on 5 days, there was good games et a lot of great moves in Seattle..
Reffering was ok, no problem with that for me.
This rule of the reset for the Golden Goal is stupid, not only because I've been concerned, but as Quentin from Ponies say, the joust at the beginning of a game is already a lot of power wasted, so why should we do a new one at the end of a game to play the Golden Goal..
The rule concerning ball joint forbidden in offense was great I think, to have more actions in the offense part..

And last point, as you organised the best tournament in Europe last season with the LO, don't you think about organise EHBPC 2012 at the same place? Floor was perfect!!

Happy to see Spring Break and Erin this week end in Konstanz, and Cosmics in Bordeaux the week after, hope see you all in London very soon!!

  • There are no legal cheap shots, just illegal cheap shots (currently).

Yeah, I know, it's just lots of people call shots taken just after the half way line cheap shots. What I meant is that while people leave their goal open on the restart, I will shoot as soon as I cross the line, and I don't care how lame people think that is.

When discussing the rules (and possible changes), I think it's ok to consider what's lame (or not) in polo as otherwise you'd never change anything?

    Fair point.

  • If you've crossed then that's an awesome shot in my book (and lazy/unplanned from the other team).

And last point, as you organised the best tournament in Europe last season with the LO, don't you think about organise EHBPC 2012 at the same place? Floor was perfect!!

Hi Will! London held the Euros in 2009 and would expect each other (major) scene to organise the event before it comes back around to us again (France need to step up!). We will be hosting LO2012 though and will be pushing for 4 courts (on a similarly smooth surface) of a larger size for next year. See you in Konstanz...

  • There are no legal cheap shots, just illegal cheap shots

you can shoot as soon as someone on your team crosses the line right? That leaves some pretty cheap legal shots no?
