If the property is end of terrace with a lot of weather hitting the wall. Water can get in that way.
If wall isulation is put into a property like this, it can soak up the water like a sponge. Leaving you with epic dampness.

Get a professional in to give you advice, don't listen to wifes tales, you'll just waste time, or follow advice given here.
What survey did you have?

It's the first floor- is it most likely therefore that the damp is atmospheric?
Given that the flat below has no damp (visible through their windows, not an exhaustive study that said!)

do you realise how much power a dehumidifier uses ? quite a lot. There are better solutions.
Yes. Get everyone you know to save those little sachets of powder that come in things you buy to keep them dry - can't remember what they are called but think that they have some form of sillicone in them (not breast implants but things that absorb the moisture from the air). When you have a few buckets full of them, empty the sachets into buckets placing muslin over the top to stiop dust spreading and getting into your lungs, and then see the mositure disappear. Rather than buckets, trays might be better but harder to cover with muslin.
Apart from the muslin and the buckets or trays, a free solution.

PS. Don't do this.^
The silicone could seriously impact upon your health.

It's called 'silica gel'.

What if Dammit can't get hold of any muslin? Will a Jew of a Christian do?

i find buddhists absorb better.

Quakers are quite good as are Methodits and Baptists are superb but Scientologists simply do not absorb anything.

They are already brimming with shit, right?

The answer then is simple:
Atheists. Fill your buckets with Atheists. If short on Atheiths, an Agnostic or two will do.

I'm not keeping buckets of Tynan around the house

You just need some ventilation in there.
This!
As you probably know I live in Norway. We bought a 55 year old wooden house. If we were to have any condensation issues, it would'nt take many years for the house to rot, and fall down. A fellow Englishman and friend has a 155 year old wooden house. The key to the survival of these houses is drainage and ventilation. I quickly discovered that these were the two most important things to look for when I was house hunting.

Unless your pointing or guttering is fucked.

Wall are rendered, looks to be in pretty good condition- no visible cracks.
No guttering on our level either.
I still think it's water condensing out of the atmosphere due to lack of ventilation, anyone other suggestions though?

So, now the cold water taps are providing piping hot water. I've read this is bad. I think it means our immersion heater thermostat is toast. Does anyone have any experience with these things?

De-humidifier is not a solution, many of the symptoms of damp are themselves hydrophilic, you have to get it dry before and as part of treating the causes...
Quite a lot is not a quantity btw.
