Help me find something to do with this

  • So this bike was given to me by my dad about 5-6 years ago, and is now just a frame and forks. It fell out of use and got scavenged.

But... it's got sentimental value; was a present, took me around London when I first lived there, then Stevenage, then Amsterdam. Loved it.

So I want to build it back up into something, something which I might actually use. Not a hybrid, then. Any ideas?

  • It's got 1 1/8 forks I think, so there's plenty of options to change there...

  • It took you to Stevenage.

Throw it under the back of a reversing HGV and dance on its shattered worthlessness?

  • Heavy duty racks front and back, shiny mudguards, balloon tyres, Brooks sprung saddle and moustache bars, then paint it a nice colour and leave it singlespeed/ Sturmey Archer 3-speed... Basically Scoble the shit out of it! It'd be awesome! Slap on a basket and use it for doing the shopping!

  • I was thinking of filing off the rear brake mounts and buying one of those single speed coaster brake hubs. The SA hub that came with it is knackered.

    True

I like this. Are there any racks out there that mount to v brake mounts and cost not-a-lot?

  • Build it. Give it to girl for shopping.

I bought a lovely shopper 5-speed for her. Was working really nicely, looked great. Wicker basket, lock, lights, the lot.

It's currently locked outside her flat, where it has been for months, rotting away, locked by the front wheel despite the QR and my explanations as to why that's a bad idea.

Not many, but P-clips are 10/1p and aren't really going to ruin the sleek racing lines...

  • Nah man, get super heavy duty racks made up, no wicker nonsense, maybe a nice wooden basket but make it bombproof!

  • The SA hub that came with it is knackered.

Never had any trouble with old SA hubs, just give em some greasy TLC.

    The best idea.

Make it into a spiffy shopping/pub bike. You could rattle can it yourself - fun project.

  • Cheers guys, think I will. Will start rack/box shopping.

  • Coaster brake, and that it, I assumed it's an alu frame right? it shouldn't take much to make it surprisingly light.

in fact, there's a new 2 speed kickback coaster brake releasing soon from SA (sturmey archer S2C).

Another thing, forget about trying to make it pretty,

  • Yep, exactly the one.

the kickback is full of win, sound complicated when you try to explain it/figure it out, but once you rode it, it's very straightforward (kick back a bit to shift up, to shift down, just slow down using the coaster hubs).

  • Used to have a folder with a kickback, and it's great. Unless you start uphill and you're in the high gear
