I give up. Unless anyone is interested in seeing videos
I'd like to see some videos. Do you coach any cyclists, specifically track cyclists?

I give up. Unless anyone is interested in seeing videos of some of the people I have coached, just ban me please.
I was joking about banning you, but we would of course like to see any videos (of weightlifting, no rude stuff)

Are any of you guys and girls lifting with a belt when you train?
Just askin'? -
• #331
Well if I could squat 2xBW or more I might consider it, but since I'm old, weak and a wimp, no I don't use a belt.
-
• #332
Not me. Even if I wanted to move into the realm of heavier lifts, I think I'd want to concentrate on creating 'natural tension' rather than relying on exterior bracing.

@DFP - thanks for the input. Here's my rationale for the choice of (4) lifts:
not bench press, due to the reasons you mentioned.
not (back) squats, because I'm powercleaning (well, more a sort of dead followed by hang clean) to rack the weight, and going over and behind my head is an unnecessary risk element in my bedroom without a spotter etc; also I feel the deadlift is doing enough for my posterior chain.
deadlifts, see above, plus grip strength (useful for climbing)
front squats, safety mentioned above, (also lower weight needed compared to back squats), more focus on anterior chain, particularly quads and abs (most of my power comes from the posterior chain, so doing these to redress whole body balance to some extent).
shoulder presses, for upper body stability on bike (seated & standing at high power), and for lifting 4-year-olds plus crates at work.
rows, for out of saddle upper body/lower back strength, more closely mimics biodynamics of this bike position than other weight room exercises, good stabilising use of arms when bent (again, not targeted by deadlifts).
This regime has left me recovered enough to get 30-60 miles done at tempo on Tuesday nights, plus half an hour done above threshold on Thursday evenings, as well as coping with whatever Sunday throws up (could be endurance / track / hills / whatever).
Also, as you've suggested, the restricted number of reps has avoided undesirable hypertrophy - my weight's stayed near enough constant throughout the 8 week period (well, I'm about to do the 8th). My posture has also improved - I'm walking taller :)
All this and he's now a proper beefcake.
Massive traps.,..

Just askin'?So my reason for asking was because, and I'll try and post the information up when it becomes available; I've just sat in on an interesting seminar that was led by a strength and conditioning coach/Physio who works mainly in Oz, who claims that correct footwear - and in his case - proper weight lifting shoes, has a more of an impact on strength training, than using a weight belt, due to the neural feedback mechanisms, that in turn, activates more muscle fibres within the core muscles.
I wasn't initially scheduled to listen to this fella, but i arrived late, and walked into the wrong room..... Was interesting though, and like i said, if i can find the info, i'll link it here.....

I reckon correct shoes are very important especially for us cyclists- we aren't as tough or schooled or whatever as track and field guys- either the adidas lifting shoes or the hungarian/polish ones (with wooden heels)from pullem sports are the business. No more sore knees!
And yes, proprioception is vital, ask anyone who has been though our fitting process- I bore them witless about it!

The question you need to ask is are you training to lift more weight or training to be more effective on the bike as they are not always the same thing (eg belts wraps etc will help you lift more weight, but will they make you stronger on a bike or create weak spots?).

Absolutely ruined myself today... supersettted weighted lunges and squats with a bar accross my shoulders, and lunges with 20kg plates in each hand... keeping balance when doing the lunges with the bar was a bit tricky, don't think the running shoes I've been using for the gym are supportive and solid enough for this kind of stuff. Then went on the leg press worked up to 200kg 8 reps to fail... then swam 60 lengths. legs felt like jelly on the ride home... love it though!
On the belt front, advice from Andy a doorman I used to work with, and stongest man in britain (in terms of squats and deadlifts) he said training with a belt is daft, you should train without the belt then only use the belt when you need that little bit more on competition day. You will benefit more from training without the belt.

I notice people like Chris and Jamie are wearing the belts when doing the 1RM on youtube. Not sure if they wear them in training though. My guess is probably for the heavy load low rep stuff.

duck feet on the woman....
227.5 is a fair old whack, wonder what I'll get up to over the summer, a couple of years ago when I spent time in the gym got up to 160 4 reps...

Unless you plan on competing in powerlifting, Olympic lifting or strongman there is no reason to ever wear a belt. Even the smartest high level competitive lifters train without one for a good portion of the year.
