I took the Cycling Proficiency test in my junior school playground in 1965. I can't remember getting a book but I did get a

badge.
The 'instructor' ( local copper ) asked us how often should you oil your chain ...
He got answers like 'once a day' and 'twice a week' etc.I answered " when it needs it - Sir "

It's still amazing how the word 'cycling proficiency' looms large in people's memories. I regularly get into conversations with non-cyclists who want to tell me about how great their cycling proficiency test was, partly because in many cases that was the last time they rode a bike, as it put them off so much. :(
