  • seeing a lot of cross checks for touring.

Is the Long Haul Trucker going to be considerably better on tours? Will LHT be considerably worse around town?

  • The Cross-check is extremely adaptive, 700c only, and felt pretty fast when set-up as a roadie, but perfectly fine as a touring bicycle as well as a fixed wheel cyclocross bicycle (and internal gears too).

But the LHT is the best bet for a heavy duty touring bicycle, it will be stiffer than the crosscheck when fully laden, and come in 26" wheel, longer wheelbase and all that (700c for the larky gentleman such as our dear old Jammy), the geometry is much more suited for touring than the crosscheck.

I'm sure jammy who is reading this topic and shed more light as I only had a crosscheck and briefly ridden a LHT.

I assumed the Crosscheck is popular because people can use it for commuting, singlespeed, touring etc.

  • The LHT is a like a tank crossed with an armchair that you can move house on. I can't describe how much I love mine, it's the perfect do anything (slowly) bike. Handles like a dream unladen and gets better the more weight you add.

If you're not in a rush, buy one.

Most important aspect of a proper touring bicycle, the very last thing you want is for it to go all noodly when moderately loaded.

The Thorn Sherpa (worthly alternated to the Surly LHT for a hundred quid more) were surprisingly stiff, so when I stand up to pedal, it was remarkably easy with the trailer, take a lots less effort.

  • Did someone said On-one snow bike?
    ..

alu too, but I'm feeling the Surly simply because it's a Surly...

I'm feeling the lack of import cost and the loss of a couple of lbs in weight. Priced right this could be the first stop for UK fat bikes. As good as Surly are you do pay a lot compared to the US prices.

As the thread says they are looking to market this more as a rock crawler / coastal bike than a snow bike. If they can get a full build with an Alfine on it for similar money to their other builds it could be a winner. A carbon fork that I could consider for a half fat build to do away with front suspension would also be nice.

BTW - +1 on the LHT. My brothers build is now chewing up the trails, it really is a solid thing but it just tracks like it's on rails. From the brief ride I've had I'm rather jelly.

  • no it's too heavy, it's a 26" 2.5 tyres weighting 1,125g which is a lots, whether the Big Apple ( 26" 2.35) weight about 800g, closer to a 700c 28c Marathon Plus (745g).

I am getting a Surly Pugsley with 26" 3.7 tyres which weight about the same.

Vittoria Radonneur Hypers weigh only around 440g at 40mm, puncture protection n all.

Bear in mind that it's on-one first foray in snow bicycles, whether Surly got a lots of experienced and loved by many, so it's a toss-up between cheap first product to expensive well-used product.

  • True to a point. The On-One designers have had plenty of input into quite a range of frames. They are likely to have learnt from the mistakes others have made along the way, just as Surly learnt from the other innovators in the world of Fat bikes. Surly did not invent the scene although they've done well from it.

  • The Big Dummy looks nice. That Kona is rank, looks like a stretched town bike

They feel quite different to ride, mostly I think because of the BB height difference. As said above, the LHT is in it's element loaded up.

  • I'd says that the LHT ride better fully laden, whether the Crosscheck simply managed.

  • extra shopping capacity, great fun to ride.

  • ^ bought on here, will carry sound system in future it is hoped...

  • haha, oh my that look like a geared version of my fugly Gangsta, it's so ugly I loved it.

  • As far as I'm concerned, it's porn.
