I've never found the braze-on position to be a problem when fitting compacts to older steel frames and I've done a few. There's not a huge difference in position anyway...

The braze-on usually has a slot for the mech to allow quite a bit of vertical adjustment. If it isn't enough, you can file the slot to lower the mech, but I suspect that wont be needed.

I've just got a late 80's frame.
Want to put fairly modern kit on it, including compact crankset (or maybe triple)
But it's a brazeon front mech.
No worries with a band-on, because you can just slide it down a bit to get it nice and close to the big ring.
But with this, I don't know if I'll have enough scope for adjustment; depends where the brazeon is and how big the slot is.
don't really want to buy a compact crankset then not be able to use it...
has anyone any experience of this?
thanks a lot
