  • Follow procedure and then you are safe if you deviate and something goes wrong then you are the one that takes the fall.

    Exactly.

It's a neat solution, and I'd use it if Brompton wasn't very anal about the procedures (for the right reason).

If the rear triangle have a play, you'll know when to replace it, if it's second hand and the previous owner haven't had it replaced yet.

  • What sort or rear wheel will I need to convert to a single speed and would I need a new tensioner?

  • Its probably fine but if you'll not miss it I'd chop them.

Now chopped to a length comparable to original Brompton bars. Not as funky, but feels better for the bike...

  • I've been on my Brompton for the last few days because bikes have been broken and I have to say have loved it. Belting down Holloway Road is the most fun. Its an old one though, from 1994 without a) the brake upgrade or b) the handlebar brace, which makes it a bit terrifying. It has also never had its rear hinge done, which from reading the rest of this thread must mean it's going to be a sad day when I try and get that sorted :-(

  • My bell arrived. See post 2051. Long, sharp ring. The finishing on the top screw is not as highly polished as the megabux original version.

  • I was going to get one, but now I'm waiting for the Knog Oi to come out.

  • Got the call from Putney Cycles, bike has arrived and been built up, just awaiting collection.
A week earlier than I expected.
    Can't wait to get it..

  • just rode home, saddle uncomfortably low, think I'll need to speak to putney cycles about swapping it out for a longer one, get home, realise I didn't pull it all the way out...

Think I still need a longer seatpost, foot is tiptoeing with me arse in the saddle now, and the seatpost is at maximum extension, but brakes are sharpish, gearing feels okay, and I think I've figured out how to fold it back down again....

  • Invalid the warranty if you do.

  • seatpost is at maximum extension..

Have you flipped the pentaclip upside down and pushed it to the top of the narrow bit of the post? (I'm assuming they still have these on the current models, this gave mine the extra 2-3cm I needed..)

  • replacing a seatpost? Really?

  • just googled pentaclip, will look into that, might solve the problem, gonna adjust the saddle, it's a bit nose up at this point in time, see how uncomfortable/comfortable, the full extension of the seatpost is, then may adjust the pentaclip...

    thanks

  • I have the long seatpost and at full extension it is the perfect height for me, which makes setting the saddle height really easy for me

  • What about saddles?
can you give a little list of what is okay to change please? As this will be smaller I assume than the 'not okay list'

    @edscoble

  • Welcome to the club @cornelius_blackfoot. The pentaclip trick works great, I made the mistake of going with the standard seatpost. However switching to the extended made a big difference for me, I only need about a cm. But climbing became easier because I could remain seated.

  • Oh the usual stuff, like saddle, grip, etc. is fine, but major stuff like an aftermarket seat pillar can affect your warranty, and Brompton are usually great with warranty.

  • You might have pulled it all the way up and it slipped. The last two Brommies I've owned have both come from the factory with a slipping post. Either a) the recommended torque is not enough, or b) I'm a fat bastard.

  • I picked up my new Brommie last week, a satin black S6L. Forgotten just how much fun they are! This time I won't be riding it home from west beers every Thursday night absolutely hammered.

  • I did think about that, as I thought I'd pulled it all the way up, but will try again tomorrow, inaugural work train/ride...

  • so rode to train station this morning, couldn't help but feel smug as I rolled up struggled to fold brompton and then walked with it through the gates and onto the train.

seatpost is definitely too low, have just swapped over the pentaclip and adjusted saddle, so will see how that goes before seeing if I need a longer one.
front tyre was squishy, which I thought was a slow puncture, but seems like putney cycles just didn't pump it up to a pressure that I feel comfortable on. Mini track pump at work has sorted that.
Will roll out of here during rush hour and see how it does in the cramped confinements of a packed train...
