Hey Jessberry,
My knowledge of Norwich is 7 years out date, but there used to be a LOT of bike shops there.
You don't need a "wheelset" you need a front and a rear.
They don't need to match.
For the front any 700c wheel will do and you shouldn't have much difficulty getting something for the 20 quid mark.
the rear will cost more though. There are a few folk on here from norwich so they might be better placed to help

Thanks for the info, that's really helpful.
...With that in mind if anyone's got just a cheap rear wheel on offer perhaps they'd let me know?
There are several very good bike shops in Norwich, but I don't really want a new wheel or I'm afraid my bike will be a real target for theives, but I will try posting something in the Norwich subsection in case anyone local can help.
Ta again for the advice :-) -

have a Normandy large flange double sided fixed on a sprint rim....comes with tub asking £30 posted

Great - this sounds really promising!
Do you have a pic?
Also what kind of tyres/tubes does the wheel take? Are sprint rims different from ordinary rims?
Sorry for newbie Qs... -

sprint rims take tubular tyres, not treading on saxbys toes but tubs are not best (expensive to replace) better off with clinchers imo in your situation

Ok that's good advice...Definitely don't want to be spending loads on spares in case I get a puncture!
Anyone else got any suggestions?... -

I'm guessing this is a bit unrealistic?...Anyone able to help?...

I have a old 27" fixed wheelset. a bit of rust here and there, but in good condition.
if your frame is old they should work alright, if the frame is modern, they will not fit
what do you think? -

If it's an 80s racer, it's likely to take 700, non?
I am currrently building up an old 80s racer for my runaround at uni.

no really, could be either way, (ta least I think so....)
anyway if it is not not a huge lost... -
• #12
Well I don't know a huge lot about wheels but the front tyre says 28-62 700x28c, and I know if I bought a new standard set of road wheels I would need a new long reach front brake as the new wheels are slightly smaller... bike dates from mid 80s poss a bit earlier...what do you think?

Ah and the rim says 28 x 1 5/8 x 1 1/8 700c

• #14
no good, good luck with the search

Ha ha, thanks...think I might need it!! :-)

If you haven't already, have a read of this,
Conventional freewheel type hubs being the most relevant bit.

Yep I've had a read, it was Sheldon that convinced me to give fixed a go!...However the current wheels on the bike are awful!! Rusty, need trueing, very dented rims, and stop with a crunch when you try and spin them - so I don't think it would be worth converting them!...Also I have no idea how to re-dish a wheel...So I thought it may be easier to get some already set up.
Still hopeful, someone out there must have some cheap wheels knocking around? :-)

Hi!
I am currrently building up an old 80s racer for my runaround at uni.
I'm desperate to go fixed but I'm on a really tight budget.
I know it's a long shot but I just wondered if anyone's got any really old fixed wheelsets lying around they'd sell me? I don't want anything new or flash because I want the bike to be as un-nickable as possible. The older and more banged up the better...as long as they work just about ok!
Also I live out in near Norwich so they'd probably have to be posted :-(
My budget is about £50 postage included.
Sorry if this is really unrealistic, I am definitely a uneducated newbie at all this.
Any thoughts or advice very welcome!
