• Hey all.

I'm looking for a top quality steel road racing frame (or bike) built by an English builder between 1984 and 1989, size 56 or 57 (or so)

I'd like it to be by a 'named' builder - ie they put their own name on the downtube.

Fastback seatstays are a must and internal routing would be great!

In a perfect world it would also have a fine 80s fade paint job!

    Moon on a stick?

    Thanks for looking

Makrie (still sad he just missed bidding for one on eBay)

  • If you would be willing to compromise with wraparound stays there are quite a few Brian Rourkes about...

  • Sold my Roberts/Stratton recently and it had nearly everything you wanted.

    Fastback stays are the best.

Isn't Hilary selling a Team Raleigh with fastbacks?

    Yes

  • Thanks for the link - Hilary always seems to have nice frames!

The stays are key for me, I'm afraid - and I'd really like to have a bike built by a builder who put their own name on it - a Tomlinson or whatever. I've already got a bike for riding so for this one I'm hanging out for the things I'd really like!

Crossed fingers and patience are where I'm at!

  • I've got a frame that almost fits the bill... 57cm, Fast back stays, built by Condor.. but its plain white with the 'moser' type graphics but it's a 1977 vintage.

  • I have a late 80s/early 90s Steve Goff, 55cm square so it might be too small, but it has the fastback stays, the builder's name, the fading paint, albeit subtle blue to silver rather than garish. Campag everything - mostly c-record or chorus.

What are you looking to spend? If you're interested a serious offer might persuade me to part with it.

  • Some photos.

    The spec is:
Frame - handbuilt in Reynolds 753 double butted, with Reynolds cast lugs, fillet-brazed fastback seat stays. BB shell has cast bridge, cutouts underneath and cable guides. chromed stay ends and Campagnolo dropouts.
Forks - Reynolds 753 fork blades (taper gauge) and steerer, Reynolds cast fork crown, chromed fork ends and Campagnolo dropouts.

Drivetrain - Campagnolo Record crankset (c-record with hidden 5th arm), self-extracting bolts, 52/42 rings. Campagnolo chorus front changer (band on, was listed in the Record gruppo), Campagnolo Mirage rear changer (the original Record rear changer is available if you want to upgrade bits like jockey wheels, but was damaged prior to my ownership), Record RR indexed shift levers (7 speed inserts, and they work, unlike syncros. Braze-on fitting). A choice of MKS Sylvan road pedals (copy of old Campag Record, no toeclips) or Look Deltas road clipless in dayglo yellow, with an adjustable thing. (I've never used them so I know not what it is.) Campagnolo Record sealed cartridge bottom bracket.

Brakes - Campagnolo Chorus monoplanar brakeset - beautiful and effective. Nice rounded Delta shoes.

Cockpit - Campagnolo Record headset (c-record). Cinelli 1R Record stem 26.4mm, Cinelli Campione Del Mondo 66-42 drops (grooved for under-tape cable routing, and drilled for internal cable routing, which is what I've used), Brooks black leather bar tape.
    (Computer not included)

Seat - Brooks B17 chopped (the Flite is long gone) and a choice of either the original C-Record round seatpost or the Chorus Aero seatpost that's on it now. And there's a Tortec aluminium bottle cage if you wanted it

Wheels - Campagnolo record low flange hubs with Maillard-Sachs 7 speed screw on freewheel block. 36 holes, laced 3x to Mavic ceramic rims. (622/15 Open Pro SUP rear, Open SUP 622/13 front - they seem identical so maybe only the name and sticker changed from the Open to the Open Pro) Maxxis Re-Fuse 700x23 tyres

  • Thanks for letting me know about the bike, but it's not quite for me. I'm keen for a 56 at least, I think - and in my dreams colours that are a bit more 'of their time'!

Here's hoping this counts as a 'still searching' bump! :D

  • Fuck British, buy this... Your size...

Gorgeous - but not for me. I'm (hoping to be) surfing at the front (to middle) of the British builders wave... :D

  • Racist

  • Being totally unnecessarily hung-up on having a bike built by the (wo)man with their name on the side, Mercian won't do it for me...

So here's an anything out there at the end of the Easter weekend bump!

  • Start of spring bump!
