The body is a hell of an upgrade.
- Twice the resolution.
- Smaller body.
- Twice the white balance override steps.
- ISO rated to 3200 rather than 1600
- Better sensor
- Larger LCD and higher LCD resolution
- USB connection significantly faster
++ don't forget fantastic quality 720p movie recording through 35mm lenses. People have shot commercials and movies on the D90.
++ Live view.
++ bigger (more coverage) and brighter view finder.
- Twice the resolution.

. . . .also the Canon 550D is worth looking at if you are in the D90 price range, 18MP (v the D90's 12MP) .

D300 has now been replaced by the D300s I upgraded my D70 to a D300 and gave my D70 to my son to play with it is a nice camera, is she self employed?

My D900 was replaced by a 40D and a 5D (to handle all the D90 type shots done on the D700) - along with two D70s and a D80, my D700 is used where I would be using my 900D (7D type scenarios) to cover all the 40D shots the 550D does so well, is she a vegetarian ?

ha ha I meant go for a better camera and a 300 is the upgrade path from a 70. Can see claim it of her tax as an expense. Wrote it in a hurry ;p
I would have suggested she could fiddle with my equipment to see if she likes it before getting her own..... ;p

Diable has a good point: If she is self employed, try to pay cash or cheque and get the receipt in her name as that makes it easier for her to claim back at tax time.

Can I ask about lenses - I have a Canon D20 that is now a few years old. I have a Sigma EX 70-200mm which I use a lot (primarily because it is the only decent lense I have). I had an old 1.8 50mm (Mk1) but there is a problem with the auto-focus, so it doesn't get used much.
I am looking for something in between, mainly to take pictures of the kids. Options would appear to be either to get the Canon 35mm f2.0, or the sigma 30mm f1.4. Does anyone have a view on either lens, or am I better off getting a 24-70ish zoom?

I have the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 on my Nikon. Not sure if I like it or not. It should be a good one (I've tested the focus and all), but, somehow, it just doesn't seem to click. I don't know. A good focal length, on a DX body, but still.

Sigma 30mm lens is a good standard lens for a cropped sensor camera like your D20 (a few years old is hardly enough to describe how old that camera is!!).

It is in digital terms.

Yeah, digital does not age that gracefully. Sadly.

Just to resurrect this thread (apologies).
I'm after a camera to travelling with and I would like it to be an SLR. My Dad has a Nikon D80, which I have been very impressed with. It is, however, a little out of my price range.
I think I'm going to my 2nd hand of t'bay and think about the Canon D5000.
Any ideas?
Should I get a body and lens separately or go for both combined.
And finally, what would be the best lens for all-round work. i.e. indoor, outdoor, light, dark, still subject, moving subject etc...
Why shouldn't I go for this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NIKON-D5000-D-SLR-CAMERA-18-55MM-VR-3-LENS-16GB-KIT_W0QQitemZ140393982433QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CamerasPhoto_DigitalCameras_DigitalCameras_JN?hash=item20b02229e1#ht_12996wt_1101
Thanks.

D300s is Nikon's newest and best DX slr - how is that going to be cheaper than a 4-year-old-model D80? Similarly, Canon's 550D is a new model. You don't say what your budget is so it's going to be hard to give advice.

Sorry. Yep I realised I was talking out of my arse. Following a brief bit of research I have linked the above in my previous post.
Opinions?

D5000 is probably an okay starter camera; but like all the Nikon entry-level models it doesn't have a focus motor in the camera body, which means you are tied to using motor-driven lenses (AF-S) if you want to autofocus (which you do). Most new lenses from Nikon and third parties *are *motor-driven, but there are lots of great second-hand lenses to be had which aren't. If you think you might get more into photography in the future, I would strongly consider getting a body which autofocuses with older/ non-motor-driven lenses.
It looks like you want to spend around £500. If you can stretch that a bit I would get a second-hand D90 with the 18-105 kit lens off eBay; or you could get a cheaper D80 body and the well-regarded 16-85mm lens. Don't know much about the Canon equivalents (450/500D) but I'm sure they're good.

Money aside, I like the 300 option.
Diable has a good point: If she is self employed, try to pay cash or cheque and get the receipt in her name as that makes it easier for her to claim back at tax time.
Not actually declaring the earnings though, as she's only doing bit work.

So the D300 might be going cheap now? interesting.
....is she a vegetarian ?
Haha. Very much no.

Video specs are really good, better than my 5DmkII. Fully manual video control.
1920 x 1080p @ 30fps
1920 x 1080p @ 25fps
1920 x 1080p @ 24fps
1280 x 720p @ 60fps
1280 x 720p @ 50fps
640 x 480p @ 60fps
640 x 480p @ 50fps
640 x 480p crop mode @ 60fps
640 x 480p crop mode @ 50fps*crop mode *- basically crops the centre 640 x 480 section out of the full 18MP sensor, giving you a freaking amazing x7 zoom (not a crappy digital zoom) - so your 300mm lens becomes a 2100mm but with zero light loss like you would get using teleconverters and the like - it's amazing, my 200 f/2.8 becomes a 1400mm still at f/2.8 and a 50mm f/1.2 becomes a 350mm still at f/1.2 - etc etc
Great for stalking and looking in neighbour's windows.
The high speed 50/60fps frame rates are great for slow motion stuff when slowed back down to PAL or film speeds.
That sounds great, seriously thinking of jumping ship from Nikon soon.

Can anyone recommend a good place in London to buy a new digital camera? Ideally I would like to be humoured by a bearded chap in knitwear who knows his onions and doesn't wear a name badge.
