You think?! My rapid rating has plunged lately after taking some time off, I'm mainly trying to avoid mistakes!
-
• #880
ah cool jono. i very rarely play rapid. the daily chess suits me more. and your rating in that is only gonna rise
-
• #882
Weird. No idea who curiouslyhungry is. Thought my tournament was invite only. Not sure how that happened. We must destroy him
Who is Ted66? Highest rated player in the tournament
-
• #883
I've played Ted, they are off here
-
• #884
Playing with curiouslyhungry, they are graunch on here, so not a stray.

Interestingly it shows 17. f5 as a blunder when I look at the game on the app analysis, but that opened up the way for your 18. & 19. knockout blows.
-
• #891
Yes, that was the plan, but it only worked if he fell for it. Which, thankfully he did.
If he just ran the king away to the queen side, the attack evaporated.
I felt that the mate attempt was quite well disguised as an opportunistic and naive attack on the rook.

f5 is a blunder if white had taken the e pawn instead blacks d pawn would also surely go as it’s only defended by the black queen so both central pawns for black would go (possibly the c pawn as well ) opening up more crushing moves for the white pieces

f5 is a blunder if...
I guess that's where the analysis falls over a bit as it should be relevant to the following moves played, not the best available moves that could have been played.
White was in a strong position already but what would the best response at 17 have been for black?
Still, I'd take playing a blunder that leads to mate 2 moves later in my favour anytime over winning a couple more pawns...

I think that engines can (and probably should) only analyse based on best possible responses.
It's obviously true that at my level (and probably the level of all of us here) you are not going to see perfect play, but that isn't the point IMO. Engines are there to help us analyse in pursuit of becoming stronger players. When we are calculating moves to play in a game, we should try and find the best possible responses, to try and disprove our ideas. That is how we can get a proper assesment of the feasibility of an idea.
Of course, we may choose to play the idea anyway, even knowing there is a refutation. That's what I did here, deciding that the risk of getting a worse than optimal position was worth the chance of a mate in two.

I hear what your saying about the analysis and engines , what the analysis is saying that if black plays correctly you won’t reach checkmate in two moves and you will lose material if black plays 17. Nxd5
White would have found a stronger position if 17. exf4 was played and also be equal on material but like you said the analysis doesn’t take into account your opponent and their previous moves
In the analysis you can play the line for black if on 17 they play Nxd5 or are you not seeing this on the app -

The app analysis UI is inferior to the full website one. You don't see lines, just move "scores".
I mainly use the app since I play on mobile almost exclusively.
-
• #897
That’s pretty much the same for me I can see its usefulness if you wanted to learn or develop an opening or your a club player but most times I can’t be bothered and as you proved in your game there’s so many ways to win

Strikes me as odd that both the Web & App don't simply pull through and display the same analysis info from a behind the scenes super computer that is rumoured to be a direct descendant of the first lovechild of Deep Blue and Deep Thought (the h2g2 version).

Not much screen real estate on an app.
