Shots off the front wheel - rule?

  • when i was reffing, i was watching all the time, but just couldn't see everything, like you said bill.

The biggest problem for me was having people (spectators) screaming at me after a whistle blow, before I have said what the blow was for. Nothing a quick "shut the fuck up" wouldn't fix though.

Also, players need number/colour bands or something, When I whistled, generally, the offending player ignored it. If I can shout "Red 3 Two Tap" or something, it's gonna work better than "Dude on blue bike, playing for xxxxx team, double tap"

  • (as in when DT called 'no-goal' for Beards shot, when everyone around him was screaming goal), and that they clearly signal a goal to the centre ref.

  • yeah, the people to the left (the london contingent) were screaming 'GOAL!' and the people to the right (the french contingent) were screaming 'NO GOAL!'

  • For the 'record'. I think Bill was joking.

I shot it, and i have no idea if it was in either.

  • It looked as if it hit the inside of the goal (where the bolts holding the uprights in place were) and bounced out in the direction of the shot... but after thinking about it, it didn't seem possible for the ball to rebound off the bolts and come out in the same direction (too smaller surface at the wrong angle).

So in hindsight, I think the French who said it hit the post were probably right...

  • it really doesn't matter. I've never enjoyed polo more than K'ruhe.

  • make sure s/he has a designated goal-ref at both ends, and that that individual knows that they are it, and that their decision is the only decision that matters .

I think they also need to be experienced players who know the rules thoroughly, and not be afraid to make the decision. New players whove read the rules but havent the experience to know how theyre played shouldnt be refs in major tournaments.

I actually think they also need to be able to spot fouls, etc, and pass that on to the line ref. Even if the line ref overrules them, the goal refs are often closer to teh action and can see a lot of things that the line refs dont see, and youre right. One ref in the middle just cant see everything.

Make the goal refs more like soccer linesmen, with the power to spot/report fouls but be overruled by the line ref, and you gain two more people watching for unfair play. Its not that hard to watch for all of it if youre an experienced player.

+1. Sure, often we know who the players are right now, but a clear way to identify them is going to be more important as we have larger tourneys and more players. Its also essential if you think about the idea of having more than one ref, or having goal refs call fouls, etc. It makes tracking who scored easier for match reports. Theres really no argument against it, at least for major tourneys.

At some point before EHBPC, there needs to be long discussion about what the rules are, and how the refs are supposed to enforce them, which includes all the people that are going to be reffing.

Definitely. I know theres a proper refs meeting planned for the worlds, but EHBPC needs to have that too. The one we had last year was actually really useful for ensuring we were all enforcing the same rules the same way, or at least as close as we could. I know its hard to get enough refs, but I think non-participating refs has to be the aim for a major tourney.

  • yeah, the people to the left (the london contingent) were screaming 'GOAL!' and the people to the right (the french contingent) were screaming 'NO GOAL!'

I actually found the fact that dt called it 'no goal' wholly admirable. Impartiality is a most important quality in a goal ref.

I wasn't being snide or self-pitying, I was quoting an example of good goal-reffing.

  • A colored-system to call fouls is an idea that i want to try in ehbpc. Most of the time, like gabes said, the ref couldn't clearly designate the players he calls.

For the ehbpc ref. I'm gonna check with my comitee, but my idea was to ask for one or two ref per city, and make a big ref meeting one or two day before games.

    Front wheel shots rules!

Colored system? Don't understand. Gabes was saying we need all team members in same colour with numbers on the back, so the ref can call the player by team and number. For instance, I would have been 'brown 3 - mallet to bike - double tap-out' at least twice during our game (Beards) versus l'Equipe.

In my opinion, you need refs who are not playing in the tourney.

No, I wasn't saying teams have to wear the same colour, but numbers on a coloured square or something similar, would be good.

  • ?

  • well, when helmets are mandatory, helmet numbers could be the best option. otherwise, pin on ones.

    School sports bibs are lame.

  • ^yeah!

  • Pin on numbers are a pain in the ass.

  • Pin on numbers are a pain in the ass.

    +1

  • yeah, but there's no contradiction, we can ask cities for non-playing people who want to come to ref'... I need to check how many local ref we can find first.

For the colored systeme, the matters is when players from opponents teams are same colour.
I was thinking about giving before every game a colored textil to put on the arm (like captain on football). Like this you have a colour for each player, like
    Blue
    Red
    Black
    White
    green
    yellow

Like this the ref has olny one word to say for calling.
But that's much complicated that the number solution... And if the teams are same colours, just the name of team and number...

Another idea was to put a colored or numebered stickers on the helmet.

  • Or a laminated number card zip-tied to the junction of each player's headtube and top tube.

  • Or a laminated number card zip-tied to the junction of each player's headtube and top tube.

Can't wait for that to save a goal! Oh the fun we'll have with threads and polls.

  • helmet solution is the better if the main ref have a tennis chair like in Karlsruhe.
Maybe put some sticker with number in the welcome pack...

  • Are helmets going to be compulsory in the EHBPC?
If not then you have an issue.

  • Compulsory ?

helmet gonna be requiered i think.

  • Or a laminated number card zip-tied to the junction of each player's headtube and top tube.

good luck doing that on mine or Em's bike.
