  • Snap, I have two now, second one bought via the forum, with leather case.

Ironically my gold star has vanished.

  • I am slightly disappointed by the lack of german literature available on amazon.
though that's make a good device for it.

calibre is great. Now have loads of news feed converted to ebook and sent to the kindle for free. W00t.

  • Installing Calibre at the moment, can it send me Newspapers via the Kindle 3G, or does it need a wired connection to the PC?

  • In the Netherlands. Free internet browsing on my kindle works. Awesome.

  • Dammit, it emails you the "toasted" news stuff to the kindle email address.
You can put it in as name@free.kindle.com to make sure it's only downloaded over wireless and therefore free, or if you're on the move, use the normal kindle.com address.

Transmissions via 3G cost you 20p per MB I think.

Is there an online service that does this? Or do you have to turn your computer on?

In other news, I broke my Kindle. It took the massive fall from the arm of a sofa and the screen cracked. Fuck. However, apparently they're supposed to survive drops from 5 feet (reading reviews, this doesn't happen very often!), so I called up Amazon and it's being replaced under the warranty. Not bad! I've gone and bought the extended warranty and bought one of the uber-expensive leather cases with a light, as well. If they're this easy to bust, I think I'll want it.

  • My cat knocked mine off the windowsill this morning in it's case, it was fine.

I got the case without the light.

Finished my first book on the Kindle last night.

  • Mine wasn't in a case. Not sure how it made contact, but it wasn't hard. No worse than what happens to mobile phones every second of every day without a problem. There are stories of people putting them in their bags with phones and laptops, only to take them out to find them busted but everything else fine.

haven't seen any. computer on it is for me, but then again my tv is a computer is a server is always on.

  • Just played with a new Kindle... holy fuck are these things light, small, better screen than the DX2 I have.

Unbelievable levels of awesomeness. Ordering 2 right now.

  • One problem with Kindles, as I see it, is that I like to read on planes and a Kindle would be ideal for carrying a selection of books on trips. One time that reading is most convenient is during take off and landing when you can't watcfh movies nor listen to ipods. Sadly, you can't use Kindles then either.

Should I get over this mental hurdle and go for one anyway? How long does the battery last? How easy is it to download books? What else do they do?

  • Why can't you use the kindle? They have flight modes so that they dont effect anything on the plane.

  • @cliveo Rest the kindle inside the inflight magazine, no one will know! Obviously put the kindle into flight mode.

It's all kinds of ridiculous. The battery lasts weeks even with Wifi on, though heavy use daily of internet browsing could reduce it to days and days if not quite weeks.

They are so light it's silly.

They can store thousands of books, and buying them is a piece of piss... they magically appear on the device usually within seconds, if not minutes later.

Reading on the device is a joy and the newer devices seem to have improved the screen so that the ink is blacker and yet it refreshes faster.

It's pretty freaking cool. I was won over anyway and already use my existing Kindle DX2, but the new mini Kindle just rocks and blows the DX2 away.

  • Oh, and if you are going to order... use this link to give the forum some monies honey:

    [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kindle-Wireless-Reader-3G-Wifi-Graphite/dp/B002LVUWFE"]Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 6" Display, Graphite, 3G Works Globally - Latest Generation: Amazon.co.uk: Kindle Store[/ame]

  • Linked clicked.... forum cashmoines :)

  • I mentioned cases earlier in the thread, but didn't want to get one of the Amazon ones, £30 really. I managed to find the following case for £9 on Amazon marketplace.

[ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0042FV5LC?ie=UTF8&tag=buro9&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B0042FV5LC"]iGadgitz Black EVA Travel Hard Case Cover Sleeve for: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics[/ame]

So until last week my Kindle never left the house, because I was worried about dropping it or crushing it in my bag. The case above is rock solid, no chance of breaking the Kindle and dead cheap compared to the alternatives. I didn't want a case that I could flick open, I'm quite happy to take the Kindle out to use.

Also I have found another thing the Kindle is bloody good at too! Reading manga or comics. So far I have just converted a bunch of Naruto issues and they look awesome. Check out this tool that takes comics slides and converts them to the optimal size for the Kindle.

  • Kindle dispatched. Whoop.

Should arrive by 1pm tomorrow. :)

  • I got my replacement the next day (yesterday). Was happy about that. And just got a lot of work done using it. They're fucking awesome for studying.

  • I bought a book whilst standing in the queue for a coffee this morning.
it was loaded onto my kindle before the coffee arrived.

  • Paid for special Saturday delivery, Kindle dispatched.

RoyalMail tracking delivery date: November 8th. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • Is it worth getting the cover and if so, should I go for the one with the light or not?

  • I got the one without the light, less to go wrong, cheaper and no parasitic power loss (light plugs into Kindle for leccy).

You are more than welcome to have a play with mine Clive, if it would assist you in making up your mind?

  • man I can't wait until xmas...

  • Best toy ever!
