Hub Spacing help

Posted on
  • Hi,

Just confusing myself with rear hub spacing...

I have a road frame(130mm rear) in which these: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=20856&src=froogle fit ok. However I can't seem to find what spacing these hubs are. I guess they are 130mm?

I am looking to upgrade to something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SURLY-SINGLE-SPEED-HUB-fixed-freewheel-135mm-32h-SILVER_W0QQitemZ250502338166QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR?hash=item3a531a5676 but is the 135mm spacing too wide? I guess that is measured from the end of the spacers (black bit where it would contact the frame)?- Is this what is called the O.L.D. measurement? Sorry for my poor explanation.

If I were to win the lottery and go for something like godtec hubs what spacing would I choose on there web site for my road frame? They have a choice of 120mm, 126,130,135. Im guessing 130...

    Thanks for any clarification...

  • if your frame is 130, then get 130

  • track hubs are 120mm standard. many can be converted by adding spacers between the cone nut and lock nut, (available from www.velosolo.co.uk), if the axle is long enough. for example, my zenith hub's axle is too short, so i couldn't respace it from 120 to 130 as then the track nut would not thread on very far.

have you measured the distance between the rear drop outs? and it is 130? if this is the case, you want a 130mm spaced hub, or respace a 120mm spaced track hub. the O.L.D. stands for "over locknut dimension" (see http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_n-o.html#old), and should match the spacing of you frame.

    hope this helps.

  • Sorry to hijack, but I have a similar question - I have a charge tap, with an internal hub gear

I am contemplating getting a rear wheel built up with a flip flop hub - what details would I need to tell the shop in order to get the right hub to fit the frame?

  • measure the distance between the rear track ends (commonly referred to as horizontal dropouts, but this technically means forward facing dropouts as found on many old road frames), and you want a hub that has an o.l.d. of this measurement.

  • measure your dropout spacing, or get them to

  • Perfect. Thanks

According to the website (although will confirm by actually measuring) its 132mm - i assume its then a relatively simple case of a 'standard' hub plus spacers?

  • yes, provided the axle is long enough to allow it.

  • ok thanks libre.

  • velosolo.co.uk do nice spacers if you want to attempt it yourself.

  • to be fair, if it's a steel frame, you can just squeeze the dropouts together a bit. I run a 120 spaced hub in 126mm dropouts with no issues.

  • yeah thought that might be ok. I guess a 135mm would fit ok in my 130mm frame too...
