Those 1.8s were cheap as chips iirc. I have one that's barely used but will hang onto (one day I'll get the camera fixed). Had a look on ebay for 'em? There was a bloke selling them cheap from Scootland.

Yeah the 1.8 is dead cheap, 80 bob new on amazon. It's plastic though and feels really cheap, however good optics. Would like the 1.4 but for decent money but that doesn't seem likely, they're 280 new and go for 250 on the bay so can just as well get a new one with warranty.
This have annoyed me for quite some time, why do things go for nearly new prices on ebay when theyre used / old / without warranty?

just get the 1.8, it's plentiful enough for everything.
unless you're on a cropped sensor camera, you'll get roughy 85mm field of view instead of 50mm, in that case save up for the Sigma 30mm F/1.4 instead, that'll give you roughy 50mm field of view.

got myself a great bargain on a 5d over xmas so got full frame. Been to and fro between 1.8 and 1.4 and can't really make up my mind. think i'll grab a 1.8 now and wait for a good deal on a 1.4 in case the 1.8 and I don't get along at all
think you shifted the balance the cheaper way which is hopefully good, thanks boss!

I have both, the 1.4 I use for portrait photographys as well as an everyday lens, the fact that the 5D have little noise at 1600 ISO helped brilliantly at low lighting, had the 5D not produced decent result at high ISO I would've recommend you the 1.4
go for the F/1.8 50mm, after all it's just a lens and camera, it's your eyes that are important.

Might be a long shot but I'm after a canon ef lens, 50mm. Prefer the 1.4 but could do with the 1.8
Other lenses could be of interest too, lemme know what you got
