How to wrap Benotto bar tape

  • I know this might seem like a really dumb question, but I've got some Benotto bar tape and I can't quite work out how to make it stick to my handlebars.

It says on the packet 'Stretch tightly around the handlebar heat end with flame and adhere to tape, pressing until it sticks'.

What exactly does that mean? There isn't any adhesive on the back of the tape, so presumably it's by wrapping it tightly that it sticks, but in the absence of any end finishing tape (as you'd get with cork/cushion tape) how do I finish it off? And what do I heat with a flame? The end of the tape or the little end cap?

Please can someone with experience explain?

  • I wrapped with inside out insulation tape first, in the same direction as the handlebar tape.

  • Micropore tape first on the main sections of bars, then wrap away.
The micropore is a brilliant at stopping the benotto from slipping.
and you only need a few slithers of the micropore, don't wrap it all the way round... just apply it parallel to the direction of the bar.

  • Sheldon has a great section on bar tape.

Benotto tape starts at the TOP of the bars and you fold the excess inside the bars at the bottom of the drops and fit the plastic caps which come with the tape to secure it in place.

Whilst Benotto tape looks cool, it does fuck all else.

    Fizik ftw.

    Wrong.

On rides of over an hour it makes your thumb and forefinger go numb. After the 2008 edition of the Dunwich Dynamo my hands didn't feel 'right' for about a week. It was fucking ace when having a wank though.

  • You tit.

  • What what what?!?! Benotto tape is ace stuff.

You don't need micro watsit to start it off, or skicky back anything, just wrap the stuff around your bars and put some electrical tape at the end where you finish, just like normal tape.

  • It was designed to be wrapped from the bottom up, covering the included bar plugs and finishing near the stem.

You used the flame from matches or a lighter to melt the tape end enough to make it sticky for securing at the top.

This method didn't always hold so many riders used electrical tape to finish the job.

Or just go top down and replace the crappy Benotto plugs with some real ones.

  • You don't need electrical tape, it ruins the effect IMO.

i have to say that using micropore (the stuff u use for wound plasters) helped a lot...

as much as i tried it's kept slipping like a slippery eel otherwise...

  • I have to admit that it doesn't feel like it'll be the most comfortable stuff...

From what it says on the packet, my hunch was that I should start at the bottom and work to the top, as I would with any other tape, and that somehow by applying a flame somewhere it would stick. Which, I guess, is what dmczone says.

But now Sheldon Brown and Zed say I should start at the top and work down. I thought doing it that way would make the overlap the wrong way round, so to speak.

This is going to be fun. Maybe I'll put some double sided tape on the bars first, just to make sure it sticks. Good job I bought two sets, I suppose.

    It won't be. It's outmoded forty-year-old tat.

  • Ha!

    Comfort.

  • I hear chicks dig it though[t]

  • Chicks dig my though[t]s

  • Benotto bartape isn't "comfortable" at all but it looks shit hot if you like that kind of thing.

what like most of the stuff people get excited about on here.....

  • ha

  • what like most of the stuff people get excited about on here.....

    Exactly my point...

  • benottos looks good, so everything else is just trivial... it's all about the look kids..

  • it's all about the look kids..

  • It's for outmoded forty-year-old twats

I'm an outmoded 40 year old twat. Do I win £5?

  • I think it looks shit AND uncomfortable. useless shite. if anyone wants some german flag stuff its been kicking round my room since the euro's, you're welcome to it.
