  • Bought a second hand headset for my beater and attempted my first assembly.
Needless to say I've fooked it up as there is quite a few mm's of play in the steerer.

The seal has split and doesn't stay in place, there's a slight crack in the adjustable race. This is tightened as well as the lock nut.

I'm wondering if this is the reason for the movement or the fact that there's a couple of mm showing above the headset.

I'm sure this is obvious to everyone else, but I've clearly got nfi.

    Pics.

    Thanks guys.

  • it looks as tho the bottom bearings may be in the wrong way up (i take it they are caged?) as there normally wouldn't be that much crown race showing i don't think.

  • Yeah I also wondered this.
I've taken it apart and the caged bearings are fooked, prob cos in the wrong way.
    Arse.
    Thanks for that though.

    Off to the 'Wanted' thread'.

  • have you never heard the old adage, 'never buy a 2nd hand headset'?

  • Yes, but It's on my other half's polo bike who talks about playing more than actually happens so didn''t want to spend money on new parts.
It's only knackered because I fitted it wrong.

  • There shouldnt be any steerer showing above the locknut like that. Usually the locknut is capped so can't crew down like that.

  • also, i think you can replace caged bearings with loose ones...you just need a few more. then use two layers of grease - the first one to stick them in and a second on top....

  • Christs, best I get a cupa then, that's a whole lot of info. Clearly should have read it first.

I haz da bike shop up the road so will carry on with caged barings. And I guess it's easier to shim that little space than to cut it.

    Cheers guys.

  • looks like the wrong stack height headset, hence the thread above the lock nut. Also, is the crown race the original one or the one which came with the second hand headset?

  • Quite, will pick up a spacer to sort it.
It's a complete headset as far as I know.

  • I have many reasons for not spending money. Many.

One of the blokes at the jumble has one of these for £10 so maybe.

  • Hi all, I'm new, can anyone help?
I am riding one those H_lfords Carrera SS/Fixed bikes & their is slight movement in the crank arm drive side (crash damage).
Am I right in thinking that this needs replacing & if so what's a suitable replacement crank?
Or, can it be fixed? It's a truvativ isoflow crank if that helps.
    Tia Andy
