Jimbo's right, you should investigate what rules apply to this if it's a Penalty Charge Notice.

There is a street in Camden where you can drive down it one way in the afternoon and one way in the morning, it is signed but there are narrow bollards you have to concentrate on driving through and it's CCTV enforced because Camden failed to maintain some automatic bollards, so people are always driving through it and getting fined - the council make over half a million a year from it. Absolutely takes the piss.

I didn't know any of this until I innocently drove through it and got a PCN through the post, but I'm now pretty sure I'm not going to have to pay as I found out the PCN should have included a picture of the sign I was meant to have violated - it didn't becuase they'd used the CCTV camera at the wrong end of the road. I found appeal case law which backs me up for that exact road, so if they tell me I still have to pay I'm going to appeal.

You should find out what needs to be in the PCN for going through a red and check everything. These sort of 'procedural' things are what people like Nick Freeman (the evil lawyer who gets celebs off drink driving charges and the like) use all the time. I've never argued that I didn't drive down that road the wrong way, but the PCN was invalid, so it remains an alleged offence until they prove otherwise.

The basics to check are:

• that the dates/times are right
  
• that it states clearly and in the correct wording what the alleged offence was
  
• that the wording about payment - how long you have to pay etc. - is correct
  
  

For this they don't need to include a photo of you committing the offence, so the wording, dates and payment rules/details are the stuff to check.

I've been off the bike for about a week with illness (I know HTFU) and I ride through Kensington High Street every day, the rozzers have traps at the Earls Court Road lights every couple of weeks, I've not been done yet as I'm pretty vigilant but I know I'm just riding my luck.

I think DJ has been given an endorsable fixed penalty notice of £60 which normally comes with 3 points on the license for jumping a red if you were in a car. I have no idea if this is applicable to a bike.

I have no idea also why some police give out £30 fines for jumping lights and some £60. Seems a bit inconsistent. There is potential that the £30 that is often being given out for jumping lights is in fact the wrong fine but is deemed possibly a fine that is more acceptable to use when doing cycling enforcement cos £30 isn't too painful to pay for something pretty minor and is just an attempt to discourage bad cycling.
