^I'm warning you Schick, things have got to change in 2010. It's a new decade, the gloves are coming off.
My 'house' at school was Clive. Named after Clive of India rather than the eminent lawyer. In fact is is a while ago so CliveO's eminence would have still been imminent.
I have to take issue with EdScoble; there is no way of riding Oxford st that will entirely eliminate run-ins with pedestrians; you can avoid collisions but not near-misses. On the other hand I think Oxford st is often quicker than Wigmore st and not as difficult to ride as many of the more tremulous members suggest. But then who would ever ask a commuter for advice on how to ride anywhere? -

About ten years ago I had my worst, nastiest crash on Oxford Street, so I hate riding down it. Though looking back I used to ride like a bit of a tit. I should maybe forgive Oxford street for that one.

Oxford Street should certainly become a largely motor-traffic free zone; it's often been mooted but has never materialised. It is a difficult problem with many stakeholders; taxi operators would be less than pleased not to be able to travel along there any longer, for instance. It is London's most important stretch of Roman road, after all, and one of the most major town centres in the world, with a pull second or third to very few. It has to be said, though, that if similar conditions prevailed in another major city, improvements would have been tackled a long time ago.
It does present considerable challenges to re-arrange bus services that currently run along the street. A tram service along Oxford Street would be the most efficient way of moving people along it. This would entail terminating bus services at either end, which is very easy at Marble Arch but less easy at Tottenham Court Road, although not impossible. The requirement to change to another kind of service just for Oxford Street would probably initially be unpopular but would work much better during peak times. At less busy times of the day, at least some bus services might run along the street without having to stop at either end.
There's be lots of other factors to consider, e.g. how the major north-south routes would be affected, or how Soho would operate. On balance, though, I'm certain that such a change would be highly beneficial--it would certainly lead to a commercial regeneration of Oxford Street, which, strangely enough, is currently undershooting its commercial potential.
Needless to say, cycle traffic should continue to be permitted.

Well, I ride along Oxford Street very slowly and as a result I haven't had a near miss there for a long time. If you're on a job, riding so slowly is unlikely to be practical, of course. It would be easier to ride with a traffic reform as above.

I suspect you are over-estimating my speed, job or no job :)

I was busy pwning you on the other thread. It's a trick we fast F5engers like to use; create a distraction and refresh another page somewhere else before our victim has time to react, then post the killing post. No worries, young Pada1. You will learn. :)
