First thing he said on stage "Ok I won't swear"

Possibly the greatest British sporting achievement of all time... Congratulations Wiggo. Soooo deserve it. Well chuffed me too!

We're going to start drawing the raffle numbers now..

Sports "personality" of the year is such a strange award. If we really are considering personalities, then Mo surely is the clear winner - as he has managed to capture the hearts of the British Public through personality, and has made a funny gesture (mobot) nationally recognisable just like Usain bolt.
The award should probably be changed to "British sports person of the year" - in which case Wiggins, Hoy and previous winner Cavendish are very deserving.
Mark Cavendish though in particular is no way beats anyone personality wise, yet he won which is weird.

He's got more personality than all the other "I gave it 110%" fucking drones out there.

Yeah wiggo's alright (he does shy away from the limelight though). But cavendish is almost an Anti-personality.

Who the fuck pissed in your pint?
I'm not suggesting that you you haven't got a valid point about the whole "personality" issue, but seriously... If someone has been urinating in your beer I want to know about it!

Sorry, the award (of questionable meaning) gets on my nerves. Not as much as the MOBO awards though.

I think you are misunderstanding the older meaning of personality, it was the word used before 'celebrity' became ubiquitous. It's not about 'personality' which I think you are also mixing up with extroversion. Damon Hill has won SPOTY, Nigel Mansell has won it. No one would say that they light a room up except when they leave it.
I also think you are wrong about Cavendish. He's a very emotional, complex character. His personality is what divides opinion. -

Love this - with 'Susan' Barker. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/sports-personality/20753011

Mo only got 8% of the vote..
-
• #238
Weird that innit. Any other year and he'd have won it.
-
• #239
I find that strange. Even watching those brief clips yesterday of him winning either of those races, I well up a bit. Somehow his reaction and that of the crowd, combined with the effort and determination he showed to finish first, make his achievements very emotional. It was draining watching him run live, but that's the reason we engage with sport.

But the whole thing is meaningless, right? I don't understand the fascination with it all.

It's a bit of seasonal fun. I can't watch it because I'm allergic to the potential of squirm inducing live gaffs and massive sycophancy. Just catching up today.

What was amazing was that the ghastly tennis player came in third. Clearly the tennis lobby (Come on Tim) got their vote out strongly. I suspect that tennis could give motor sport a run for its money in terms of getting the vote out. Cycling is quite good but must have relied upon the support of others to have Wiggo elected.
I bet that posh bird was pleased to fine the one person in Britain skinnier than her to give a prize to.

Indeed and as no cyclists will win for a number of years, I shall not watch it again.

Bullshit, Wiggins has stacks of personality!

Froome didn't look very happy when the camera was lingering him and the Pound. Looks more likely he'll be squiring Wiggo again next year but still, at least pretend son!
re: tennis lobby-I suspect cycling fans are more fanatical than the tennis lot... and Murray, as gifted as he is, is a bit of a sour puss so that turns people off him a bit. I like him though and I'm sure if it was Wimbledon he'd won he would have been a shoe-in.
Wiggo definitely had more charisma than the rest on stage, and I bet there will be shit haircut wiggo wigs on sale for next years TdF and loads of punters stoating about in them on the alps!

• #246
Murray's a cock. He should never be forgiven for that Portugal shirt incident.
I hope he never wins Wimbledon. He'd be even less bearable than he is now.
