File it out? The only thing in there should be where the steerer tube meets the fork blades? I would've thought this would be too far down on an average sized bike with an average sized stem?

Stem is average size. I seem to remember Kris saying something about sticking something in there so something didn't fall out? polo + beer = bad memory.
Looks like a thick ish washer but attached.Off to the hardware store. This could take some time though. Thanks for the tip Jono.

Sounds like a starnut, but then the forks would be 1 1/8 and you'd be using an ahead, surely?
-
• #5
didnt 1" aheads use starnuts too? assuming the foks are second hand, the previous person might have been using it with an ahead stem-i.e massive bodge!.
take a picture!

Could be internal butting to strengthen the steerer.

Snigger.
Sorry.Defo 1" and defo Quill stem.
Thinking about it, if he said he put it in (for whatever reason, I'm sure he said so **** doesn't fall out?) then it can surely come out?

if the stem has the wedge on a slant, it is pretty easy to chop a bit off it, then replace wedge and bolt. see how far in it actually goes.
have done so in the past with no problems. -

Sadly not. That was my first thought.
Hammer time failed and my file is not man enough for the job, so I'm swapping the stem. Jobsagoodun hopefully.
Almost a pointless thread had it not been for Landslide's boulbous helmet admission.

I have some kind of 'shelf' in my fork steerer that's preventing the stem from going all the way in. Is this normal, are there ways of getting it out?
Cheers guys.
