  • So we've already got a snowboarding thread for those shaggy-haired posers who spend half the day on their asses blocking the piste ;-) but its about time we got a thread for the real kings of the mountain.

Lets kick things off with some Shane, RIP...

  • +1 Skiing Rocks!

  • I'm off for a week up in Val Thorens in the new year, can't wait!

    I fucking love skiing :)

  • Santa's bringing me these bad boys:

Will match my Line Chronics nicely ;-) Might invest in a helmet this year too

Nice, i'm supposed to be heading out in march but can't decide where. We're going to austria in hope of cheaper beer. Any recommendations?

I've only skied in France and Switzerland so can't give any reccomendations for Austria I'm afraid.

Val Thorens is a pretty crap resort, I get the impression that it was built as a ski resort only, rather than somewhere that was a little village some time ago and has managed to retain some character and atmosphere. But it's easy to ski over into Meribel and Courcheval so there is a massive ski area, which is one of the reasons we decided to go there.
Most places in France are pretty expensive to drink out (around 5 Euros a beer) but if you drink in your room before going out its much cheaper.

  • Anywhere that combines the euro with skiing will not be cheap! But you're right, Austria is often cheaper than the bigger French resorts. I've only been skiiing in Austria once, January 2008, to the Pitztal glacier (highest mountains in the Tyrol), and it was pretty immense though only big enough for 3 to 4 days I'd say. They had some massive runs down from the top of the glacier, and of course the luxury of kurrywurst and a huge selection of beers at lunch! Not much of a town/village feel though.

Despite Meribel being Clapham-on-ice the three valleys is one of, if not the, best ski areas in the Alps. Don't know much about Val Thorens - just ski'd through it a few times.

  • I found Val T pretty awesome in terms of skiing, but the resort just isn't up to much. Did Tigne and Val D'isere this year, the grand motte is superb, i could ski that all day and be happy.

  • hitting Alta for a week in after the new year.

    pretty excited.

best (in bounds) skiing in the world!!

  • skiing is like snowboarding..... but for losers.
    Fact.

  • Agree.

Although I've never skii'd so can't say shit... No Ski No Talk..

I remember talking to someone from this here forum who is really into skiing, can't remember who though.. wasn't you Ewan...

Ah shit, I've just subscribed to the Skiing thread...

  • Skiing or snowboarding ...whatever.. I grew up skiing, found snowboarding. For me a bit slower but a hell of a lot more fun!!! Personal preference innit!! Apart from that same thing really. Kinda like some people on here likes geared bikes, whatever floats your boat!

  • Eyebrows is the Forums resident Ski fanatic - dude knows his shit.

  • It was probably Henry I was talking to.

    Off.

  • Rad...

  • the only cool snowboarder I ever met was.........

    hmmm.
    skiing = ace.
    snowboarding = lacking in grace.

motherfucking quadruple backflip with a triple flip in 1983:
YouTube- quadruple backflip on skis (triple twisting!)

    snowboarders can suck it.
I can huck it. and fuck it.
plus skier= faster, and touring is impossible on a snowboard- ok well not impossible due to split boards and/ or snowshoes, but it sucks balls alot more than touring on skis.

Summit ski descents are also wicked awesome.
however, there is some merit to snowboarders, terje, the great one. JJ the second.

  • For fuck's sake. All the decent newspapers are full of this skiing/snowboarding bollocks for the whole of the winter. Give us a break please.
I realise that most aficianados of this malarkey are thick posho twats, but surely somebody smart with a commercial axe to grind must have set up a forum or two?

    Try this. http://www.epicski.com/forum/

I'm actually quite tempted to give boarding a go, mainly due to some recurring knee problems. Its just so down heartening to think i will go from having the freedom of the mountain, to sitting on my arse and going not very far not very fast, at least for a couple of days anyway. Oh, and the fact i'll have to keep on undoing my binding every five minutes to get on a lift!

I'd also like to point out that the rivalry between skiings and snowboarders is pointless. Firstly, everyone knows the biggest twat on the mountain, is always wearing snowblades. And noone will never be as cool as this guy!

HA! Too true. Snowblades are well gash.
