In never ceases to amaze me how in a country where the majority of the population ended up there in an attempt to free themselves of religious, social, and cultural persecution, that all they do is insist on creating ghettos where people not of their ilk are not welcome.

I have a lot of love for the US, and a lot of good friends from over the pond, but the society as a whole is so segregated, and segregated not by love of each other, but by hatred of those who are different.

It is also ridiculous how such a small Jewish community has such a large say in matters - i cannot imagine any other community in New York being anything but laughed out of city hall at the suggestion of removing bike lanes.

Having said that i have a very good Jewish friend in Colorado, and the overt anti-Semitism that she is regularly shown (despite being non practising and showing no outward signs of bewing Jewish) just because peole know her background in their small community, beggars belief.

Well firstly we have a non-sequitur - I am questioning the notion that Sundays should be kept free for rest - and you respond with the notion that scientists are the '"new priests".

Also there's a lot of confusing Hasidic Judaism with Judaism and even religious belief with nationality in this thread. It's more than a bit disturbing tbh.

Quite well for a while. I went to see the Rabbi who said we are not an inclusive religion and don't want you in our club, you filthy heathen*. I was told to read a religious book and go and worship a god I don't believe in every Saturday and attend classes during the week. Not too bad so far as I live next door to a Synagogue. I should come back in 6 months. At the first visit I would be rejected and told to be told to go away for another 6 months. At the third visit (18 months after I started this life changing voyage into the murky world of double standards**), I could finally join up if I knew enough about god and stuff. The price of admission would be my foreskin. You can see my dilemma. I might have embarked on this path, if only for the sake of a quieter life, but her family hated me. At her sisters wedding to my best friend (8 years after we split up), her parents wouldn't look at me and when meeting my wife in the 'thanking everyone for coming' line-up, withdrew their hand once they realised who she was.
The girl in question was sectioned for 3 months after we broke up as she was clinically insane. She is now a primary school teacher.

You can still do that, you still have the freedom to meditate or kick leaves around in the park or sit in the bath all day Sunday - but as we progress and are able to offer insulin to those in diabetic shock or guarantee that mothers who have failed to be able to breast feed can have fresh milk on Monday morning for their child - we have to concede that there is good reason for society (as a whole) to remain 'productive' (for want of a better word) on Sunday.
