  • I agree.

  • I have just become aware that Gallery Cafe in Bethnal Green now does vegan fish and chips every Thursday. Heading down there this Thursday with a few folk if anyone's interested.

KEEN. what time you heading down? i would bet money that gallery will run out haha. i finish at 6 and can be there c6:30?

also it wasn't me you met nitnux but i assume we'll meet the day after tomorrow >^.^<

  • Welcome, Nitnux--are you mistaking Caz for Lucy, though? Lucy wanted to come but couldn't make it.

Oops, I may well be! I looked back through this thread and misread the attendees. Look forward to seeing anyone who can make it tomorrow. I will let the Gallery know to expect some panic-buying of tofish 8-)

IRL I go by James, rather than Nitnux.

Cool, 6.30 seems to be the time!

  • exhausted from work and having to bail, many apologies. please let me know how it is!!!

  • Gah totally missed this - sounds interesting, hope it is nice!

  • No worries. I'm sure there will be another trip before too long!

  • Oh, and food review:
I thought it was ok, but nothing exciting. Tofu in batter really with decent chips and peas. IMO, it could do with a proper marinade to give it more flavour, but the portions were very generous.

  • have you had the tofush and chips at the coach and horses in soho? is it the same?

  • Tofush at the coach and horses is a bit meh. Rubbish frozen chips, tofush is alright, nothing to bang on about though. 6/10.

  • I often get this from Wing Yip in Croydon (as well as many many many satay stick things):

It tastes very fishy, although I've not tried battering it (mainly used in goan fish curry type things)

I have, though I was a bit squiffy on that occasion, so my recollection isn't crystal, but I think it was pretty similar... Possibly slightly better at the C&H...

  • Make your own!
    So easy:
    Get dates, chop them fine.
Then your base is Soy Protein powder* + regular porridge oats

    • unsalted unsugared Peanut Butter (slightly heated up to make it more runny, and smooth is much better).
Get some other dried fruits, and lightly chop these and some extra nuts.
(an optional extra that is quite handy is coconut oil)
Add the dates (you need quite a lot of them) and the peanut butter to a trusty blender till quite pasty (add the coconut oil at this point).
Pour over the oat and soy protein powder, add the chopped dry fruit and nuts, (add any additional flavouring you want), and get stuck in with your hand till its all Clif bar consistency.
Transfer to a container, squash it right down, and into the fridge for 12hrs.

*or any vegan protein powder, soy is the least unpleasant I've found so far.

(rough ideas of weights: 300g peanut butter: 150g protein: 400g oats: 100g(+) dates: 50ml coconut oil. But you need to play and change the recipe till you get the consistency you want (and the flavour))

I made a huge batch of this to take touring with me and it's really helped out so thanks a lot! The first day we were in France everywhere was closed for the bank holiday and I ate nothing but loads of this for 100ish miles and felt fine! I made 3 different varieties as well, one with loads of almonds mixed in,, one with dried banana and one with crystallized ginger (I had a Holland and Barrett voucher burning a hole in my pocket)

  • The ginger one sounds great.
I was thinking of chucking some cacao nibs in too... really need to get round to making another batch myself.
    Glad they worked for you.

  • http://www.beyondkimchee.com/ Not an actual vegan site but many of the recipes are vegan and she is always careful to mention when a recipe is vegan or not. I love Korea n food and this site has been very useful.

Am making rustic Korean spinach at the moment - not for the first time. Several places in London you can find Gochujang and Doenjang; I go to New Loon Moon on Gerrard Street.

  • New joint @ Eberswalder Str. in Berlin (opposite Mauerpark)
They do vegan "wraps", soups, and salads.
Sort-of a "hip" vibe in there (loud minimal techno when I was there); wasn't in the mood for neither "oriental" nor "mexican" cusine, so I didn't try.
Stuff looked very fresh and tasty. Staff looked tattooed, and a bit toffee-nosed.

  • I would be a bit cautious of a place that includes lemon hummous in an 'oriental' dish, and one that also invites you to eat sh*t ;)

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orientalism, its a perfectly fine use of the term- cf Saïd.

  • Also- Avocado pudding is amazing. Probably my discovery of the year.
You can make it part of your side salad and then have an excellent pudding as well... which is even better.

  • I like tempeh. I'm definitely going to this stall soon:

  • By the way, do we have a date for the vegan ride yet?

    Sorry if I've missed something.

  • Can anybody really recommend something that melts (for pizza), instead of mozzarella.
I really don't miss cheese, generally (strange, because I loved it & used to eat loads), but on pizza something is missing.
This one vegan fastfood thingie here has a good soy product (for their "cheese" burgers), but I can't imagine this on pizza, both taste- and consistency wise.

  • I find tofu 'ricotta' works really well on bread/pasta/pizza, ie Mediterranean types things. It's quick to make and although it doesn't have the stringiness of mozzarella, it is creamy, smooth and extremely moreish, without being overpowering.

  • Thanks!

Also, new english word learned -
moreish (Brit.) [coll.] *adj. - *schmeckt nach mehr

    : ]

  • Anyone know any good places for veg/an food in Farringdon and Kennington?
