  • My LG G4 needs replacing.
    More frequently losing GPS signal,
'genuine' replacement battery, bought this Summer, gives out at '42% capacity'.

Is there a reason Moto(rola) aren't a Chinese brand by your definition?

  • Is there a reason Moto(rola) aren't a Chinese brand by your definition?

Because there is a Lenovo customer services center somewhere like Milton Keynes who will answer your emails and fix your phone if it fucks up.

  • ...it seems like all that's needed is a shit hot camera on a 64GB phone that's not too slow.

And decent battery life. That would do me very nicely.

  • But is the battery life ever that bad on a new phone?

I know now you can get multi-day ones, but I can't really think of many times I can't charge my phone over night or in the morning.

FWIW the Moto Power ones have good battery life.

  • Not pocket money prices.

Sure, still a lot of money to a lot of people but I think the key to this is that there are lot of people (like me) who run their premium phones into the ground and upgrade only when something seems really attractive.

In my case, I have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ that cost the thick end of a grand about three years ago and its starting to show its age and has a cracked screen. Either the 5G Pixel 4a or the Pixel 5 will be a significant hardware upgrade (the core things that matter anyway) at a much lower cost.

I know my reasoning isn't watertight, but I do think that those phones at those prices will tempt a lot of people into replacing ageing premium phones and buying into the Pixelverse.

In the past Oneplus filled that gap in the market but they left it a while ago.

  • Also on the pixel front. Order now and you get a free pair of 150-200 quid headphones.

And Google's doing 0%apr if you're that way inclined. Might be cheaper to buy phone through them and sim only

  • Trying to contact Vodafone to upgrade to a Pixel 5 after 3 (semi enjoyable) months without a phone. Hardware conked and now in a constant restart loop. Obviously can't log in vodafone via browser as it sends a security SMS that I can't access. They don't believe I am who I am on the Twitter despite all the security faffing. Don't have another phone at the moment. Can't book an appointment at the only shop for miles where I can bring ID. It's almost like I should find another provider - but I can't deal with the faff of changing numbers.

  • Is there a reason Moto(rola) aren't a Chinese brand by your definition?

Not my definition, hers. I tried explaining that most phones are substantially Chinese regardless of brand or location of final assembly. She has been drinking the Trump Kool-Aid with respect to China, so mere facts are not a consideration 🤷♂️

  • Oneplus filled that gap in the market but they left it a while ago.

Funny isn't it. I totally forgot that they used to be cheap. Now they're just not as expensive as an iPhone.

  • Never having owned a Moto phone thank you for this info.
I hope they are better than the LG UK service centre (with a Bracknell phone number?),
who returned a 'repaired' LG G4 with exactly the same problem,
(overheating motherboard), as the one I sent to them in July 2017.
The 2nd replacement is the one I am now aiming to replace as it is long out of warranty,
and has given full value for its £220 purchase price in December 2015.

  • There's a difference between being made in China and being made by a Chinese company. I wouldn't ever buy a Huawei (CCP spyware), Oppo (Apple knockoffs), OnePlus (Oppo under a differnet brand) or Xiaomi (Samsung knockoffs).

  • Aaah!
I'm still tempted by a Poco X3 NFC for £189/64G ram as a two-year fill in until 5G gets installed
in enough places for it not to be a novelty.
Main uses; photos, podcasts, SportsTracker, step counting, email, web browsing, (no gaming).
    Anybody have a better suggestion?

  • It's really easy to move your number to a new provider, just find the one you're going to and there'll be a guide on their website.

I'm pretty sure I did the whole process by text message a couple of years ago.

  • Pixel 4a 5G offer with Bose QC35 headphones for £499.
    Are the QC35 worth £200?.

  • Where does a Pixel sit on your spectrum of acceptability?

  • There's a difference between being made in China and being made by a Chinese company. I wouldn't ever buy a Huawei (CCP spyware), Oppo (Apple knockoffs), OnePlus (Oppo under a differnet brand) or Xiaomi (Samsung knockoffs).

    Lol

Would recommend adding Apple and Android to the ban list if you're worried about companies caught with backdoors.

  • They're fine, why?

  • pretty sure I did the whole process by text message a couple of years ago.

    Face. Meet palm.

  • I wouldn't expect to get 'anything' for less than £200.
If the Pixel4a 5G at £499 comes with £200 value of Bose QC35 headphones,
the additional £100 gets me 5G
and guaranteed Android updates for a couple more years than the £200 Poco.

  • Well, you get the new phone first, then transfer the number to that phone/sim - not quite as silly as it sounds...

Unless the issue here is not having the sim either, ah, yeah, ignore me.

    Face meet palm.

  • I'd never really thought of Oppo as Apple knockoffs (more so than any other phone).

  • The French and Spanish CSR guys working there were nice but a bit slow in terms of comms and the actual repair team where clearly awful at updating them. But asides from that and the cost of insured delivery, they were pretty good and my phone has been OK since.

  • They do look pretty similar (although there's obviously a limited number of permutations of something like a rectangular watch).

I hadn't really heard of Oppo before I got one but I'm aware that mine is nothing like an iphone (it has a pop-up selfie cam) which is why I was wondering.

  • I have just replaced a LG G4 with a Poco 3, is a great improvement for the money
