Why has my Face ID stopped working with my glasses?
I started around a month ago and seems to be getting worse. iPhone X running iOS 16.7.10 (won’t go any higher). Glasses aren’t new. I reset it today without my glasses but it won’t configure at all with them on - as a new if or as an ‘alternative appearance’. -

I’ve just ordered a MacBook Air.
My current and only computer is an iPad Air 4, what would be the recommended method of moving all my data over? -
• #21933
IME it all does itself seamlessly.
ETA - I have a couple of iMacs. When I bought my MacBook Air at the start of Corona Virus it shifted all of my stuff over without any real intervention from me.
ETFA - Switch on the new one and follow the prompts.Transferring stuff is exceptionally easy. -

Thanks, so via cable?
I don’t have enough iCloud storage to accommodate my music and photos. -
• #21935
No. I don't think a cable was involved. All via Wifi. (New MacBook Air will not (easily) play using cable).
Edited to add - I'm not sure cloud storage is relevant. -

Question for the video editor types. One of my clients is after a machine that'll handle her first video projects, will an M3 MacBook Air do the job? She's keen on the 14" M4 MBP but that is the way more pricey option.

Much appreciated!

What kinda videos is she wanting to edit?
-
• #21939
They'll be short things, I'm not convinced she needs a laptop or that she's gonna use it to edit at all but she's adamant she wants one.

Only issue will be if she needs to plug in more than one drive or an extra display as air only has two usb c ports (and ones usually plugged into power), so would need a hub to plug then into.
She’ll have more than enough power to run premiere and/or Final Cut or resolve.
Unless editing is going to be her business the air will be sufficient -
• #21941
That's what I thought but thanks for confirming. She's gonna get a hub anyway as she'll be getting a couple of hard drives for backups, wanna get her into good data management habits.

If it’s just for short stuff any of the new comps will do it but learning how to use what ever editing software will be the challenge

FYI the new airs (2024 M2 onwards for sure) have MagSafe 3, leaving both usb- c ports free @RonAsheton
Also worth noting that I think they are limited to one external display plus screen, worth checking as Apple seems to have arbitrary limits on these for some reason…

M1 and M3 Air can only work with 1 external display. M3 can work with 2 when it's in clamshell.

Thanks, all. I'm not convinced she's going to use it for editing anyway, I've been supporting her dream to become a film maker as best I can but I don't think she has the passion, or possibly the capacity, to make it happen. She's 19 and has an intellectual impairment, big dreams but she's not very good at applying herself and making the work. I'm trying to steer her away from buying a very expensive laptop that she may not need.

So I'm thinking minimum of 16Gb of RAM for video and a 512Gb internal drive, how does that sound? Just been looking on the refurb store and those specs bring it in at just under AU$2k, might as well get the M4 MBP for the extra five hunnert bux!
-
• #21947
Doesn’t need 512gb, nice to have but doesn’t need. Don’t know what the base level of ram is assuming it’s 8gb, that should be enough (edit), base level in the m3 is 16gb so that’s plenty.
Rushes on hard drives, project files either on the same hard drive as rushes or on desktop. Edit on desktop, export final big files of finished film back to hard drive. Keep small copies of final film on desktop just because. -

Thanks for letting me know my missus has an m1, and that uses usb/thunderbolt port for power, and being tech support had to figure out a way to power it and run an external monitor off it, forgot they’d brought back the MagSafe in later models, so you didn’t have to faff with that.

Little Studio Display update (if anyone is remotely interested): went to pick it up today after it had the screen and logic board replaced. Not really sure what else could have been replaced(?!)... but it's now working fine. I took my macbook to the store to test the screen on my system (and hopefully save a potential return trip back to Manchester) and was met with some weird vibez. When I asked why it bricked itself, he just said it was a "fault". Told the guy I'd heard of repairs causing issues to macbook / camera recognition etc but he just laughed. Overall, despite the free repair (still 6 months warranty left) I'd say it's been a shonky customer experience.
